| New 7 week old rottie to our family. Please help! Hey Everyone, This is my first time to this site. I have read many different postings and I love the site so far. Thanks to everyone who posts and who replies. We just added a 7 week old little girl to our family. Right now we have a 18month old male rottie. On saturday we picked up our new addition. We are a little concerned however. We put the two of them together and he will not leave her alone. He directly goes for her private area and tries to constantly lick it. We tell him no but he doesnt really seem to comprehend. He also towers over her and has been swipping her with his paw everytime she tries to move. I am worried he is going to injure her? It just makes me really nervous. We are new at this with two so any help or suggestions would be appreciated. I know it has just been only two days and I am probably over reacting I just want to make sure we are doing everything the right way. Also she is constantly whinning at night for up to an hour at a time when we put her in her crate. Is there anything I should be doing about this? Again thanks to everyone. Hope to have some suggestions. Thanks, Brendan&Nicole |

| Re: New 7 week old rottie to our family. Please help! If you read as many of the different postings as you claim, surely you read postings about the folly of having two young dogs at the same time? Surely you read this can be especially challenging for novice Rottie owners to pull off successfully? You say you're "new at this" and looking for "some suggestions." My suggestion is to return the female and concentrate on your 18 mo old. You already have a puppy and really, truly do not need another. |

| Re: New 7 week old rottie to our family. Please help! I have to agree. This can be a dangerous situation due to the size difference and fact that your male is so young. I think it's kind of like the raging hormones of a teen age boy, but unlike humans, your male doesn't know how to control it. Hopefully the breeder will understand and be willing to take her back. I am sure there are people out there with experience that have done this successfully, but I wouldn't take the chance. |

| Two pups is going to be a challenge. How much training has your male had? Is he in obedience classes now? Is he neutered? Your female puppy may have a vaginal infection if he keep sniffing at her back end. Does she have any discharge or is she peeing more and often? Do not let your male bother the puppy. I would have the male pup on leash when she is around. You really need to take things very slowly with the both of them. She is a tiny, very young pup, and he is very large pup. The pup could get hurt, or scared. Everything should be positive for the pup right now. She is in a new home, with new people and a new dog...and leaving her litter. You are going to have to work on doing training and socializing and spending time with each pup alone...so that the pup bonds to you and not to your older pup. As far as crying in the crate...it will get better with time...the first week is usually the hardest. Gina

| Re: New 7 week old rottie to our family. Please help! Thanks everyone for the replies so far. I understand people will have their own opinion in this matter and I respect that. However I did a ton of research and looked into it very carefully before we decided to add another rottie. We are very close with the breeder and they have 10 of their own. Our male is very obeident for the most part. He has gone through man classes. I would like replies from people that have had two rotties and know what they have gone through. Again thanks to everyone that has replied so far. Your suggestions are taken into consideration |

| Re: New 7 week old rottie to our family. Please help! Your 18 month old is still a puppy (in mind, if not in body) and I can tell from what he is getting away with that he is not exhibiting good manners. You must control him, as you would a young child with a newborn, with the pup. It is NOT his decision on what he can and can't do with the new puppy. If you leave it up to him, sooner or later he will hurt the pup. It may be unintentional, but it will happen. Stop him from licking her so much, why are you giving him free rein with what he wants to do with her? She is going to be frightened and that is something that can affect her relationship with other dogs her whole lifetime. He needs some manners taught to him immediately! I also suggest you return the youngster until your boy is older, has gone through several training classes and is able to listen to you and obey with voice control. I think you are biting off too much in bringing home another young pup while the 18th month old is still in need of much training. Your boy needs to be in obedience classes, should be neutered (18 months is the perfect age for it if it has not already been done) and should be totally under control before you bring a new pup home. Good luck.

| Re: New 7 week old rottie to our family. Please help! DK1382: You have been getting replies from experienced people in this situation. Go back and re-read Brunie's mom and Sharon Marples' posts. I have raised two intact males approx. 15 months apart in age with no problems. I respect the fact that you say you have researched and thought extensively on this decision, but you are having such a simple problem right now that has a simple answer to it, that is, controlling your 18 month old male rottie. This requires the use of a leash and reminding this young dog of his manners. Basics in foundations regarding training and house manners should already have been laid by now, by you. If your dog isn't comprehending at 18 months, you have a communication problem and you need to work on this. You have increased your workload by tenfold, you need to be that more diligent now with your training and supervision. I will repeat what the others have already said, as it is that important: your young pup of 7 weeks needs safety and protection from you at all times, needs to grow up in a positive environment to build her confidence, this includes being protected from harassment from another dog in the house. And, at the same time, the 18 month old, while a young dog, needs continual training as well. |

| Re: New 7 week old rottie to our family. Please help! Thank you so much Zorro13, Sharon Marples, and Brunie's Mom. Your advised has really helped over the past day. My 18 month old is already doing so much better with the leash!! He is actually laying down in front of her and letting her come to him. It is adorable. Right now everything is showing signs of good progress. I just have one question she is peeing every hour and it does not matter where she is. I try to take her out every 2 hours but that does not seem to make a difference. She is not drinking to much water. I dont know what it could be. Any suggestion on potty training?? Thanks again for all your help!!! I really do appreciate it. |

| Re: New 7 week old rottie to our family. Please help! Yes...it could be a UTI, and you should have it checked out at the vet's office. It could also be the reason why your male was so interested in her back end. Sometimes they can smell infection. Glad to hear things are getting better...you will have alot of work ahead of you. Gina
