unhealthy pup???

Hi,

Can anyone please tell me what the side effects are to the puppy if the female dog has had puppies one batch after the other without the correct rest period in between? Someone is giving away a pup and this is the situation, i justwant to know if there will be any negative issues with the new puppy?

Thanks.

Why would you want to buy (or even take) from a back yard breeder? The questions that would be more important to me would be:

1) Were the sire and dam health certified? Does the so-caled "breeder" have certifications on both of them for hips, elbows, hearts & eyes?
2) How old is the litter? At what age are they giving the pup away?
3) How many were in the litter?
4) How old is the dam of the litter? The sire?
5) How many litters has she had in the past? Were they all done one right after the other?
6) Does the breeder own both the sire and dam?

Re: unhealthy pup???

I would question a dog from anyone that produces "batch" upon "batch" of puppies. If they are doing this, they are not likely doing any of the other things a good breeder does like health testing and I would guess you'd be in for a whole heap of heartache with medical bills and training.

Re: unhealthy pup???

Doing a "back to back" breeding is not intrinsically bad, in fact many reproductive veterinarians suggest it as being healthier for the bitch, there is no need for a "rest period" other than the normal time which elapses between whelping and coming into the next heat, if you're talking about doing one or two sets of back-to-back breedings with a given bitch over her lifetime. However, from what you're describing, we're not talking about an ethical breeder opting to breed two carefully-planned litters from different sires back-to-back, we're talking about a breeder who breeds the same dogs over and over again, in which case, the issue has much less to do with whether back-to-back breeding is appropriate, and much more to do with what Sharon outlines. Back-to-back breeding isn't the problem (unless the bitch is being bred on EVERY SINGLE heat), the problem is overbreeding a single bitch or bitch-dog pair, not doing health testing, not proving the dogs in competition, etc. and producing "batch upon batch" of puppies. If some of the best and proven (in multiple areas) Rottweiler studs in the world produce only around 100 puppies or so, what does this breeder's dogs have to offer which is so wonderful that they should be producing "batch upon batch" of puppies? Sounds like a backyard breeder which only avoids being an actual puppy mill by virtue of the fact that they don't have enough dogs to produce the volume a puppy mill does.

IMO, unless this breeder meets the basic requirements Sharon outlines, run away. You will (hopefully) have a Rottweiler for a decade (give or take a few years), it's simply not worth risking taking a dog from a situation like this (aside from health and temperament issues, you also have the serious problems which can result from the inappropriate puppy-raising which usually happens with unethical breeders).

Re: unhealthy pup???

Being part of this forum is such a privilege and I thank each of you for your input, expertise and assistance.
I have since decided not to accept the puppy as the negative side of what could happen is now completely understood.

Thank you again.
