Is he too small?

We bought a puppy on Feb 15th according to his paperwork his whelp date was Nov 5th. It is now April and his is 5 months old and he is only about 20 pounds. When we got him in February he was only 12.7 pounds. The concern from our vet is that maybe he is not pure rottweiler, even though his paperwork says he is. I am wondering maybe he was sold too early and the whelp date was altered? Any thoughts, he has ALL the color markings of the rottweiler.

Re: Is he too small?

Male pups at 5 months old are about 50lbs.

If his paperwork was fudged, it would need to be by about 3 months, so I doubt the paperwork has been played with. I am guessing that perhaps he is a mix or just unusually small.

I have never seen or heard of a purebred Rottweiler at 5 months old being that small. My particular line is smaller in size and the girls are about 45lbs at 5 months old, so I am not really sure what to say ....

Re: Is he too small?

How tall is he? He'd have to be VERY lean to be within normal height range for Rotties that age and be purebred. Aside from the coat markings, does he look like a Rottie? Without pictures it's really hard to tell, but my guess is he is not purebred. It's not that difficult to fudge paperwork to make the pups seem purebred.

Post Re: Is he too small?

How is his health? Does he eat and drink well? Any vommiting or diarrhea? How active is the pup? Is he loosing his puppy teeth?

I would be worried that if he is a purebred Rottie, that he has some medical or health problem.

An 8-9 week old puppy weighs what your pup weighs now.

Something is not right...either he is mixed with something much smaller? or there is a medical problem?

Also...just by chance, did you buy your pup from Kimbertal Kennels?
You live in the area.

When you say paperwork, do you mean his registration application or is this just some paperwork that the breeders gave to you?

The only way you can prove that he is purebred is by DNA testing. I've never heard of a purebred pup that age weighing that litter. I can only surmise that he is not purebred. In which case, you have every right to return him if the so-called breeders lied to you.

Re: Is he too small?

Yeah, I ditto what the others have said. Rottweilers are large dogs. We have a female who is mixed with a Newfoundland and she just turned 5 months on Saturday and weighed in at 60 lbs (we are feeding her a large breed food with a controlled growth formula too, so that she doesn't gain too fast). Did the vet say that there were no problems with your pup?

Re: Is he too small?

He is now 17 inches tall and probably about 25 to 30 pounds. I appreciate all the thoughts and help. The paperwork I received on him is an ACA registration form.

Your pup is over 5 months of age...he should be weighing in at around 50 lbs or so? What is ACA registration? Do you mean AKC registration?

Is your puppy getting his adult teeth? How is his appetite? What does your vet say?
What is his exact weight? When did you take him in last to be weighed?
What do your feed him?

If you could give us more information it would help.
Where did you get this pup from? Did you see the sire and dam of your pup? and meet the other pups in the litter?

Something is not right here...either he is mixed with some other, smaller breed...or he has a medical problem that is stunting his growth.

Gina

Re: Is he too small?

Some info I found: ACA is an organization that exists for pet store owners. ACA papers are easily attainable with a little money and some photos.

OH NO!!!!
Then it sounds like this puppy came from a puppymill or a BYB (backyard breeder).
More then likely he is not purebred...and is mixed with some other smaller breed.

Just enjoy him, train him and love him...and please have him neutered.

Re: Is he too small?

look i am suggesting to you right now, that you return him, it is true my pup was about 50lb.s at 5months, and about 21". THERE IS NO WAY, HE IS PURE. Return him and get your money back. I know of cases where people get lied to by breeders, it can be very distressing to come home everyday to what could have been a rott. Its not worth keeping him...

Re: Is he too small?

I have tried to attach a picture but no matter what I do it is too big to download. I have cropped it as much as I possibly can. He looks like he has a very small rotty body but almost like a beagle head. He is now about 7 months and he has lost all of his baby teeth. He is healthy, just small. He is adorable and not afraid of anything, but he doesn't look right.
