Re: Is he too small?

I agree with all the above posts - seems very small to be a pure rottie...I looked at a 4 month old rottie puppy a few months ago and he weighed in at a hefty 45lbs. I can't imagine a 5 month old weighing only 20lbs...very possible since he was at a pet store that he's mixed with something...

Re: Is he too small?

Well he's not too small he just probably isn't all rott.

Who cares you've had him for 7 months. I wouldn't return him if he turned out to be half mouse.

There are ways to find out what he's mixed with. If you have $60 to spend there is a test that will identify the breeds in your dog.

Re: Is he too small?

If all he has are "ACA" papers, they mean NOTHING. They are just like Continental Kennel Club papers. That fact, plus his small size, tells me he's not purebred. And, you aren't likely to get your money back if you take the pup back. You could sue in small claims court to get SOME of your money back, based on the difference in value. But, keep your pup and love him.

Re: Is he too small?

Have you contacted the breeder at all ? Did you receive him through the mail, or did you meet the breeder somewhere and exchange money for a puppy ? These are all red flags, unless you really know who and what you are dealing with.

I know of cases where people get lied to by breeders, it can be very distressing to come home everyday to what could have been a rott. Its not worth keeping him...
I imagine after the length of time the OP has had this pup there has probably been a strong attachment formed. Have you considered this at all?

What makes a dog 'worth keeping' has nothing to do with size or breed

The pup is more than likely a cross breed but that doesn't make it a worthless object that isn't worth keeping What it does prove is that people should get their pups from COE breeders, not pet stores and ensure they get appropriate papers.

Re: Is he too small?

I agree that the "worthiness" of this puppy has nothing at all to do with his size, weight, or whether he is a purebred or not - although it sounds as though he's not. Even my female was 50 pounds at 5 mos. What you should do is love your new puppy, take care of him - let him take care of you & have a good life together. Keep him, for sure -- he deserves a loving home as do all pups. HOWEVER, take that "breeder" or pet store to task!!!! Hire an attorney if funds are available. If not, do file a small claims suit on your own. Get a letter from your vet to bring. Write a letter to the editor of your local paper. Protest in front of the shop with signs, if it's an open business. These people need to be confronted and humiliated in public for what they engage in. Don't allow them to continue these practices -- keep your pup, though. Even if the judge rules -- should you have the gumption to take them to court -- (not understanding that you & your pup are now bonded & you do not wish to part with him) that if you return your dog, the seller must refund your money, simply publically state on the record, something like: "Thank you Judge, for ruling in my favor and against these who unscrupulously sold this mixed breed to me with such deception, but I intend to give this dog a good life at this point as that is the right thing to do. The wrong thing to do is what these people have engaged in - fraud and deception, and I can't even imagine what fate would be this poor animal should I ever relegated ownership back to such amoral individuals. I am here simply on principal alone". **Best to you and to your dog; I'm sure he is as cute as can be! Enjoy him for who he is!!

Re: Is he too small?

I have talked to someone recently in my town that said my boy is a German Rottweiler. I searched German Rottweiler on the internet and found pics that look like my Anubis. Shorter legs and longer noses.

This person does not know what they are talking about.
Dogs that come from Germany are German Rottweilers and they have a tail.
Poorly bred Rottweilers are out of standard....longer noses, longer noses, etc.

If you pup weighs as little as he does and is small...then he either is a mixed breed or unhealthy.

How old is he now? how much does he weigh?

Since you got him from a questionable "breeder"(byb), I would suspect you have a mixed breed.

Re: Is he too small?

There is no German rottweiler/american rottweiler....Do a search on here you will find that out. Regardless of the fact your dog may not be "pure" he is your dog...love him play with him...you dog will be loyal to you for the rest of his life. Love your pup...Good luck!

Please don't listen to people who have no idea what they're talking about. If you want someone to look at your dog and give you an opinion then make sure it's someone who is knowledgeable about the breed, not just someone who says or thinks they are. These types that spout off rubbish have usually never owned a Rottweiler in their lives.

While you are looking up German Rottweilers on the net, presumably on German websites then look up their breed standard at the same time. That should answer a few of your questions. He's your dog now, just love him for what he is. I'm sure you must have bonded with eachother in the time you've had him.

Re: Is he too small?

Oh there is no way I parting with my dog!!!! He is my baby. He and I and our family and our other dogs have bonded and are a family. It is not even a possibility that we would part with him. I just do not want anyone else to be dupped. I have since been told that we are very lucky to have a healthy dog because many from this pet store are not healthy.

Re: Is he too small?

We also had him fixed because we already have 2 un-neutered males and didn't want any problems with dominance. We were not planning on breeding him, we just want to love him and give him a good home. We would have hoped he would be normal sized.

That's the absolute right thing to do. We're all glad you love him & are giving him a wonderful home, however --- please do consider taking the action(s) I suggested in an earlier posting. The ONLY way to insure others will not get "dupped" is by confronting these people within a public venue...small claims court, the Better Business Bureau, your local Chamber of Commerce, newspaper story, etc...I know it takes time & effort, but you sound like you're a stand up person. Give them a piece of your mind & heart. These are terribly unethical people; God only knows what they have done in the past & may do in the future. Good luck again.
