The best thing you can do for a "submissive urinator" is to build up their confidence by training...and not to make a big fuss when greeting.

They do often grow out of it by a year of age or so.
Get your pup into classes, and the more obedience she knows the more confidence she will have.
Do a search on "submissive urination"....it's been discussed here many times.

Yeah, this is good advice. My 10 month old did it every single time he would greet someone. I take him outside to pee when I know companies coming over, and that seems to help. I don't let him go right up to someone when he's overly excited either. Only after he's calmed down alittle. Its pretty rare that it happens now. I hope this helps.

Re: Excited pee

I have a female who will be 9 months old next week. She started puppy classes when she was about 3 months old and would pee when she met new pups and people. She would pee when we met people on the street or when someone came to visit. We still do obedience and also have started in beginning agility. She really loves the agility class and our trainer has stated that this type of training helps with a dogs confidence. I believe it. About 2 months ago she was peeing alot less and now it is no longer a problem. She's a big girl now.

Re: Excited pee

I have the same problem with my 10.5 month male. I just can't bring myself to believe it is "submissive peeing". He pees when new people visit along with rubbing his body on their legs and going in between them. Nothing about rubbing his body on and weaving through there legs seems submissive...He is definitely excited.

I'm still hoping he will grow out of it. He has been in OB classes since 13 weeks. Another time he pees which is quite embarrassing is when we go to petsmart. As soon as someone pays him attention he begins to squirm and pee (in excitement)...

Please just explain how this is submissive behavior.

Post Re: Excited pee

Your pup does sound like he's doing excitment urination.
The solution for the submissive and excitement urination is the same.

*Keep greetings low-key
*Don't punish or scold for the urination
*To avoid accidents, play outdoors until problem is resolved
*Take the pup to the vet to rule out any medical issues
*Ignore the pup till they are calm

If you pup is peeing at petfood store...just get people to ignore him...tell the people he's in "training".

Re: Excited pee

Thanks for the tips, I figured there was a difference between the two. It seemed like all my research on the forums people would swear it was submissive and there was no such thing as excited pee.

Re: Excited pee

Thanks for all the responses. She is pretty dominate, so I'm pretty sure it's not submissive urination. She just gets so excited when she sees people. She is in obedience classes, has been since she was 16 weeks old. We have the same problem there. Hopefully, it's something she'll outgrow. This is my second female and I never remember having this issue before. Thanks again.
