Rabies Vac

I took Meeka to the vet today, she got her last set of shot. I thought all my other dogs got the rabies shot more like around 6-8 mths, but vet said in California pups get them with their last set,so she got it. Is this something new or maybe i just dont remember correctly. Also she weighed in at 59 lbs. at 4.5 mths. She is tall and on the lean side, but has alot of lose skin to grow into. She eats 5 to 6 cups of Cannidae daily. Should i cut back on food.

Re: Rabies Vac

If I read California statutes correctly, a dog must be vaccinated against rabies at 4 months. Here, where I live, a dog must be vaccinated at 3 months. Many years ago, here in PA it used to be 6 months, I am more comfortable with 6 months actually.

Re: Rabies Vac

I think the more important point is to not give a rabies shot within 4 weeks of any other vaccine. Combining the rabies with a parvo/distemper vaccine is putting way to much stress on the pups immune system.

Re: Rabies Vac

I just checked and she got the rabies and corona only today. She got her parvo, distemper on 3-10, which is only 3 weeks ago.

Re: Rabies Vac

Well, I don't want to nit-pick, but there is no reason to be giving a 4.5 mo. old pup a coronavirus vaccine. Coronavirus normally only affects very young pups, is not very common to begin with, and at your pups age is not dangerous. Unfortunately, many vets like to cover all the bases and will recomend every vaccine under the sun "just to be safe". You owe it to yourself and your dog to be informed about the current vaccine protocols. I'm not trying to bully you, I just think too many vets have a cavalier attitude about vaccinating our dogs.

The rabies vaccine should not be given with any other shot. As has been stated it is one vaccine that does cause problems, and it's best not to stress the immune system.

Your pup seems on the heavy side for a female. You are feeding alot of high calorie food to her. I would cut back to about 4 cups of food per day, and see how she does...if she needs more go to 5 cups.

You want slow, steady growth.

Re: Rabies Vac

I have learned so much from this forum but I also spend a lot of time being confused!! Hope you guys can straighten me out again! At 14 weeks Brutus was given the rabies vac and the DHPP-L, now I am finding out the two should not be given together I have also read that vets are vaccinating according to older recommendations. What is the new suggested vaccine schedule? I am afraid maybe this vet is overvaccinating...is there such a thing? What are the complications related to administering the rabies and DHPP-L together? In addition I am not sure how this vet would give the rabies vac alone and not within 4 weeks of any others because he vaccinates every 3 weeks. So far Brutus has been vaccinated for DHPP at 6 weeks, DHPP-L at 8, 11, and 14 weeks, and is to return for the last DHPP-L at 17 weeks. The vet we are going to was very helpful with our old rott but we adopted him when his owner died (my grandfather) and he was already an old guy, no puppy stuff to deal with, wondering if I need to research other vets in the area?

Re: Rabies Vac

Instead of automatically getting another parvo booster, ask your vet to run a titer instead. My vet wanted to vaccinate every 3 weeks up to 20 weeks old. Instead I had her do two sets of shots and then had a titer done at 15-16 weeks old. This came back excellent, so no more shots! At 6 months I had the rabies shot given. I'll probably have another parvo titer run at some point, but I'd be willing to bet he never gets another parvo/distemper booster in his life. For more info on current vaccine protocols, do a google search for Dr. Jean Dodds, probably the foremost authority on overvaccination out there.

Re: Rabies Vac

Dr. Jean Dodds is our specialist for our 4 year old with Thyroid and seizure issues, she knows her stuff. She has helped us so much. I never thought to ask her about our puppys vacs. I havent been real happy with our regular vet.
