| Re: 2 problems with my puppy Issue #1: He's a youngster and untrained, so of course he's not going to consistently pay attention to you! You should only be treating him kindly and consistently--why should he pay attention to you and want to be with you when you treat him badly? It's unkind and cruel to be mean to your puppy, so please stop treating him badly. Issue #2: Why don't you take him to your vet, since it sounds as tho he's unwell? |

| Re: 2 problems with my puppy If your trying to go for the natural diet milk, cheese, and chicken is lacking balance. Dairy should be feed sparingly if at all. This could make hime sick. Maybe you should start all over with a clear mind knowing that he will not know anything you don't teach him and get to teaching. There's so much info on this site already about things like this. There's also alot of info on the web about Natural and Raw diets. Last if your pup doesn't eat soon you really should re-think the vet.

| Re: 2 problems with my puppy Where are you located? Let us know and we can help you find a balanced food in your area. And why would you expect a 4 month old puppy to pay attention to you if you are not making it fun for him to pay attention? At that age, everything should be fun and games for him. You can teach him lots of things with treats as rewards. But he is not old enough to know what you are talking about if you are just asking him to come or do something else that you have not put a lot of training into. Get him enrolled into puppy obedience classes and go from there. Get a leash on him, take lots of treats and start training, training, training! When he finds out that he has to look to you for his food and treats and that he won't be mistreated AT ALL, then he will gradually become more and more dependent on you and pay much more attention. You need to get this pup on a balance diet, they should not be fed just what humans eat, get a good, well-balanced food for him. Don't buy the cheap stuff, look around and get a good food for him. What you are now feeding him could easily make him not feel well. I would also suggest a visit to the vet just to make sure he has not picked up some "bug" from another dog or a visit somewhere. Make sure the vet tests him for worms. Keep us posted.

| Re: 2 problems with my puppy Not to be mean here, but yelling at a dog IS treating it badly. You don't have to physically hurt the dog to treat it badly. |

| Re: 2 problems with my puppy I would definately take him to a vet....it sounds like he is pretty sick to me and it may get serious if you keep putting it off. a normal, healthy puppy should be eating lots and have alot of energy to play. has he had any shots? |

| Re: 2 problems with my puppy Quote:
Almost any dog can be motivated by food, and in the beginning, treats are used and then slowly "phased out" as training continues. Quote:
The rest of the symptoms are signs of a sick pup. Take him to a vet pronto. If you are trying to avoid the vet, then why have a dog? Pets get sick and just like humans, need to see a doctor when you're not sure why they're sick or how badly they are injured. It's safe for you and the pup, and cheaper in the long run. All mammals with the exception of humans (most humans), become lactose intolerant shortly after they are weaned. So milk, cheese, and other dairy products will cause pain, discomfort, and "sickly" conditions for a dog (in high abundance). Chicken is great, but not by itself. You have to add more to it, and you have to know what needs to be added and in what proportions. This is why most people just go ahead and buy dog food that is "pre-mixed." It's better than experimenting on your puppy and have him become sick. Dogs are not carnivores entirely, they do require plants in their diet. However, not just any vegetable is acceptable, and meat alone will make for a sickly dog too. Ask around for a good quality "pre-mixed" dog food. It would save time, money, and make for fewer headaches. Congratulations on your new puppy, and I hope you find useful information on this site. If the replies seem overwhelming, it's simply because everyone wants to help you to avoid novice mistakes and those expensive (and preventable) vet bills. Also, training a Rottweiler is a necessity if for no other reason than their size. They also have a bad reputation which pushes for training too. A trained dog is a happy dog. They can go anywhere because they are well behaved. 1-2 years of frustration is all it takes to remove a lifetime of banishment to the backyard, shelter, or worse for your dog. Please give training a try. This breed is incredibly smart and so willing to please. |

| Re: 2 problems with my puppy My first concern is the diet and health. I've tried 3-4 foods on my 10 mo. You need to feed a high grade food which as stated above is what this pup might have been on previously, hence the change. A trip to the vet to check for worms, parasites etc would be in order. A sick pup will learn nothing and they can deteriorate quickly. You've had the pup for one week. Don't we all wish a pup would listen consistently after one week! Training with Rotties seems never to end. Yelling will defiitely not do anything other than possibly make him fearful (very bad) or worse. It can be frustrating but consistency is a must. Believe me, there were times that I would have liked to pull my hair out. My 10 mo even with daily training doesn't always do what is expected of him. He will try to get away with ignoring me when he's in his extremely playful mood. Then he gets time out, no play and gets put into his place. Proper training and proper nutrition is a must with a Rottie or your dog WILL end up in solitary confinement, a shelter or worse down the road. Not sure how much experience or research you have done on this breed but you sound like you need outside help to get training yourself as that is where the root of most behavior problems start. I had done extensive research, read many books, spoke to trainers, and scanned the websites for articles even before I got my 2nd Rottie! You never stop learning about this breed. I am still doing this and find loads of wonderful information on this site alone. Good luck.
