Barking at 3 months

Hi all,

My 12 week old girl is doing great, she is a joy to have and I am so loving the puppy months.

She knows sit, down , shake , talk and also is getting very good on the recall, comes 95% of the time in the yard and house off leash, it is an ongoing process. She has been to puppy classes and we train every day.
We will be going to obedience classes also.

After she learned "talk" she has tarted barking loudly when she heares the front door. She does this no matter who is coming home and will run barking towards whoever. She is wagging her tail the whole time and seems happy but really noisy.

I dont mind her barking if some1 is knocking or in our yard as an alert bark but this is to much.

I am just looking for training ideas to get her to understand stop barking

Thanx all!!

You could try teaching her to "hush" or "quiet." Basically, say the command when she's barking and when she pauses or stops, give her a treat.

Re: Barking at 3 months

Thanx for replying hokisteph

Looks like I am the only 1 with this prob!!

Been trying to give her a treat when she stoppes and it works sometimes but I might have to work on my timing, maybe she thinks that i am sometimes awarding her for barking and sometimes for not barking. might be confusing her! lol

I will keep at it!

To help with the timing, you could try using a clicker.

How is her socialization? Is she afraid? Maybe you could have a friend continually knock as you teach her to down, stay and quiet. This may help her understand that you are in charge of who is at the door.

Re: Barking at 3 months

Well when this happenns she is just bursting with joy!!!

While she is barking she is also running towards the door, wagging her tail so hard that her but is going from side to side! she is actually almost unable to run straight becaus of the but wagging! lol
She is also excitement peeing at the same time wich I need to figure out also.

She has been well socialised since I got her at eight weeks, goes everywhere with me, to the nail salon, pet store, visits, meet lots of kids, other dogs that we know, cats and so on. At the same time we were finishing work on our house so she got used to loud noises such as drilling, hammering, sawing and such. She also just loves going to the vets!!! Of course we r still very much socilizing her!

She went to puppy classes 3 days after we got her and everytime we came she would walk to where the teacher normaly stands ( in front of all the other pups) bark once then come to my chair and sleep (usually on her back with legs spread wide and belly exsposed) through the classes! There were 5 other pups , 2 10 week collies, 2 10 week labs and a 12 week Husky.

She seems to be a confident pup, very curios and wants to meet everyone and everything. The few times that she shows fear we ignore the her and go on about our buisnes and she will usually follow our lead.

I did notice that when hubby comes home she is much calmer, only barks once or twice, no peeing . What happens when he comes home is that he comes in and totaly ignores her while hanging up coat and bringing in groceries and putting away. When he has finished this he then greets her. The whole time she is Following him , wagging her but as fast as it can go!!!

So I was thinking I should maybe get everyone else to do the same thing when they come, that is ignore her until she is calm. We have been working on her jumping on ppl and that has been going well.

Any thoughts r well apreciated and please do correct me if I am doing anything wrong!!

Thanx all!!
