Crate training a rottie

Hello,

I just got my rottie puppy yesterday from Thailand (i am in Sri Lanka). I am having trouble crate training him.

He is 3 months old and hates the crate and always is crying when he is inside. We are feeding him inside the crate for starters.

how do i complete his crate training

Cate him, so short periods of time. Such a sleepy time. Never cate him as punishment. Feeding him in the crate is a good start. Give him treats and or toys to play with. (Supervise this) Praise him when he is in his crate without vocalizing. I know its hard but try not to let him out of the crate when he is vocalizing. When he is vocalizing, ignore him.

Re: Crate training a rottie

congrats on your new puppy! i would do a search for crate training and read the many posts. it may take some time. you have to be patient and you have to be willing to ignore the whining. if they whine and you let them out, they've learned that whining works. how long is he left in there at a time? good luck!

Re: Crate training a rottie

Some rules we had. Always put in the crate with something good. Never put in the crate when you are angry as a punishment. Whining gets you nothing. Ignore the whining, when the pup gets quiet then you can take him out. When he comes out of the crate, go straight outside to potty. Training could take a while so please be patient.

Re: Crate training a rottie

At first it may be awkward for the new pup since this is new- but in time (short time) he will see it as 'his place'. Always associate the crate as a positive experience, lots of 'good boy' praise when he goes inside and a treat. Have some toys he can play with in there. Also- where are you keeping the crate? It's important it is someplace where he can see you and what's going on. For us- it's in the kitchen as that is where most of the traffic is in our house. He shouldn't be crated in a bedroom or basement where you are not in site. It's important that he feel safe and knowing you are nearb takes the edge off of any anxiety as he gets adjusted. Also, if you leave him for periods of time in the crate, keep a radio on so there isn't dead silence. It always helped for us and now Sebastian lets me sleep until noon on weekends without making a peep!
