Whining????

My pup is a little over 10 months old. Every since he was a pup (got him at 12 weeks) he has whined around certain dogs. He does it around my brothers 7yr old male rottie and I have noticed it is 99% of the time only around other males. He loves other dogs and I never have any issues even off the leash at the dog park. Anyone ever heard of this or know what it may stem from?

All my rotts talk in one way or another....

Re: Whining????

Neyland - it's hard to know from an internet post, why your male is whining, but a lot of dogs who are a bit unsure or fearful of their surroundings, will whine. We have a doberman in our training class right now that whines the entire hour of class. He sounds miserable and almost as if he is pleading with his owner to take him home - but she says certain things at home make him whine too - so the trainer is working with them on this - and in class, the whining is almost certainly attributed to his 'uncertainty' about being in the class with strangers and strange dogs. Your male is still very young, and he may in fact be unsure of some of the dogs he meets - thus his whining at only certain dogs. As a side note, you might consider doing a search on dog parks and read some of the experiences and thoughts on taking your rottweiler there. It's not the best place for socialization and exposure - as there as so many unknowns you can't control.

Re: Whining????

Thanks for the info jakesfostermom. The dog park I take him to is completely enclosed small (only 20 dogs allowed in at a time) and I only let him in on weekdays when hardly anyone is there. I usually know most of the people and their dogs when I go and have only been three or four times. He doesn't whine the whole time....actually stops once he gets to meet the dog, sniff etc. Just hadn't really seen it before in other dogs I have had. I know all about how vocal rotties are....part of the reason I love them b/c of their personality. The only one that gets me is his snoring. Sounds like a 500lb man with breathing problems. Actually had to move him and our Lab to our office accross the hall from the bedroom b/c he was so loud. Needless to say he has taken over the room and he now thinks he owns it.
