eye problems

my pup loki started shutting his left eye alot and pawing at it took him to vet he said his eyelid was wanting to roll inward and some of it id due to his wrinkles in his face but it is only in one eye he said if it does not go away we can do surgery it would be cutting under his eye and pulling the skin tighter so the skin is not so loose any of you guys had this problem i'm hoping the ointment he gave me will help and make it stay away as long as the ointment is in his eye he's fine but if i go a day without putting it in it is bothering him again so if you guys have had anything like this could you tell me about it

Re: eye problems

This is called entropion, it's a genetic malformation of the eyelid - there have been many discussions of it here if you do a search (also search for "entropian", which is an incorrect spelling, but one many people use). Ointment will just make the dog more comfortable and possibly prevent scratches on the eyeball for a while, it will not fix the problem, only surgery can fix the problem.

Re: eye problems

Is this the same thing as "dry eye"? My rescue came to me with that and some drops I "attempt" to hit the target with. Doesn't seem to be too painful, just annoying to her to get the drops in. It annoys me to have that done too!

Re: eye problems

No, this is not dry eye. As stated, entropion is where the eye lid rolls in so that the eye lashes are now on the eye ball. There is an opposite problem which is extropion <sp?> where the eye lid curls up, away from the eye. Both are serious problems and both are genetic.

Re: eye problems

My first Rottweiler had entropion and had surgery on both eyes.

It's called ectropion when the bottom eyelid is too loose and droopy.
