Talking Bo is home but not happy with crate

Bo is home and we are so very happy to have him. He almost jumped out of the tech's arms when we went to pick him up

The reason why I'm writing this is because I had posted before about how Bo was training me to only be in his crate if I was in the room. When we got home we let him resmell the entire house and then went to put him in his crate (doc said quiet time for Bo as much as possible) and he freaked out! As soon as I shut the door on his crate he started jumping (hitting his head on the top of the crate) barking, and doing complete circles. I didn't let him out but I have no idea what that was about? Maybe because I washed it in bleach and all of his toys are new so everything smells different? I'm at a loss I have no idea what to do

I edited this to add that Bo seems confused as to going potty now. He goes to the backdoor which is where we've always taken him but the vet said for now to take him out front (all rocks no dirt) and he seems confused and takes him a long time to go. I'm guessing this will work itself out with time and treats.

Have patience and be firm. Continue to put him in his crate and when you do, give him something to chew on to relax him. Raw bones, a filled kong, etc. will do wonders to keep him occupied. Don't let his jumping and barking make you let him out before he has settled down and accepted the crate. It will just take time, but he will come around to it. Be sure to leave the room when he is in the crate, he needs to know that no matter where you go, you will always come back to let him out. I also suggest that you go places when he is in the crate, leave the house entirely. Don't let separation anxiety start to happen by always being in his sight, that is not a fun situation for a dog to go through either. He needs to learn to live by himself at times.

As for the potty situation, the same goes, he will come around and will get used to where you are taking him. He will eventually have to go so don't give in to him on that either.

Patience!

Re: Bo is home but not happy with crate

Well you were right it took Bo all of 3 times to realize no matter what he did I was NOT going to let him out until he was calm. If I take him out and he starts to run around and be "rough" back in he goes until he is calm. Right now we have to be careful because if he plays to hard he starts coughing and then throws up!

Tomorrow I have to go to cali to pick the kids up from their dad's and my DH has some errands to do but promised not to leave Bo alone for more than 1 hour without checking on him. Normally I wouldn't have him check but with Bo just coming home and being sick I'm nervous about leaving him alone for long periods of time without him being checked on. Or am I just over doing it? It's hard when they've been sick cause I swear I thought Bo was gonna die he looked so bad.

Poor Bo and he thought his training of me was coming right along and then I went and found this site lol

First post!! We have just gone through the same period, our pup Brandy would wake us up every couple of hours to complain about the crate, it was like having a newborn again!!! She now sleeps through the night and only once in a while complains about bed time, just like the kids!!!

He's just one of MANY dogs who has encountered that "problem"!

I don't blame you for being cautious about leaving him. I'm sure if DH keeps a close eye on him (and keeps giving him whatever meds he got sent home with) he'll be fine and keep recovering.
