Re: raising a rottie with german shepherd

A bit confusing. You have a 2 year old female who had puppies - you kept 2 of these puppies (not sure if they are female or male) who are now 4 months old and you now have a 8 week old puppy (who is female?). It sounds like you've taken on more then you can handle. I don't have alot of experience, but from everything I've read, you have too many dogs that are close in age and if they are all female you have an even bigger problem as most females that close in age will fight. It is recommended that you not add additional dogs to a mix unless you have a firm grip on those you already have. Is the 2 year old spayed? I know how difficult it is to properly train one dog - however with 4 dogs that are still all puppies (the 2 year old is still growing) - you have your work cut out for you.

Re: raising a rottie with german shepherd

Do not allow the puppy near the adult GSD bitch.

Be aware also that female dogs of working breeds often do not get along and will try to fight to the death of one. Do you have a way, when these puppies are older, that you can PERMANENTLY separate the adult GSD bitch, the female GSD puppy and the Rottweiler puppy?

I agree, 3 young puppies is a bad idea.

Re: raising a rottie with german shepherd

my boyfriend has a german shepherd and she'a about 2 years old now. about two months ago i brought home a rottie puppy (male) who at the time was around 4 months old. for the first two days the german shepherd ( daytona ) attacked my puppy ( dega ) and we let her nip at him for the most part. my boyfriends idea...i was not happy with this...but he was right, since the rotty knew to not fight back it work out and in two days she was happy with the puppy and their always together now.

Ok, the mother Sheppard will not accept the new rottie pup and that is why she is attacking the new pup - as Gretchin indicated - do not let the new pup near the mother. She will kill it if given half a chance. Might I ask why you have taken on so many pups? It is generally felt that you should raise the dog you have now properly before getting new pups. Most breeders will not let littermates stay together and you have 2 pups from the bitch still there. I don't see good things down the road. good luck!

You were very lucky - I would never let a pup get attacked by an older dog. Have you given any thought to how this pup will grow up - they grow afraid when put into a situation where they are in danger and you don't protect them. I feel your boyfriends advice was poor and downright dangerous.

Re: raising a rottie with german shepherd

you cant make a dog like another. the only thing you can do is hope they work it out. if she got to mean i stepped in and made it clear she was to back off and she always did. she didnt go after him just put him in place if he was in her food bowl or tried to play with her, and he would back off. i was also worried about having him around our friends chiwawa but all they do is play together night and day. he is sooooo gental with her.
