Re: I need some advice please...training a young puppy

Why did you get her when she is only 6 Weeks old? Its a bit young for a pup to be away from the mother and litter. I would question why the 'breeder' let her go so soon.

Re: I need some advice please...training a young puppy

puppy should have stayed with the mom and littermates until 8 weeks old...it plays an important role in your puppy's canine socialization.
but since you now have her, training starts since day one.
housebreaking.
set of rules. if you allow her on bed now(for example), are you allowing her on bed when she is full grown?
start socializing with immediate family. puppy kindergarten lessons.
teach her name. call her and reward.
once she has a few sets of vaccines(3-4 months or so), enroll in puppy kindergarten classes. socialize with known healthy pups.
read around forums for more on puppy training and ideas.
good luck!

Re: I need some advice please...training a young puppy

First of all, please read ALL of the stickies at the top of this forum, they will give you some very important information.

Bringing your puppy home this early can cause lots of socialization problems and bite inhibition problems. It should have been left with it's mother until it was 8 weeks of age. This alone tells me that you purchased your pup from a back yard breeder. Do you know anything about the health certifications and titles on both parents?

Not to be harsh, but can you return the pup and look for one from an ethical breeder that will be there to mentor you and answer all of your questions and help you to raise the pup properly? The questions you have asked should have been asked well in advance of buying a puppy. Start to read through ALL of the forums on this site, with lots of reading comes lots of information which you will need.

Re: I need some advice please...training a young puppy

Please begin calling trainers NOW -- she needs to have a few vaccinations before she can be in a group class...but you can certainly do private lessons immediately. Call around and find a trainer that is experienced with Rottweilers and have them come out and do at least one lesson with you to get started on the right track. You can learn a lot from this forum, but it's not a substitute for actual one-on-one help.

What exactly can a trainer teach a puppy that needs to learn to be a dog?

Re: I need some advice please...training a young puppy

Alex, its a pity you didnt come here first. What do you know about the parents and the breeder? It really sounds like the breeder is not reputable and is just farming puppies for money, not for the love of the breed.

Seriously consider demanding your money back. You dont want to have all sorts of medical problems because the parents werent properly screened for defects. If the breeder let them go at 6 weeks I can almost promise you the parents havent been screened. Good luck in whatever you choose.

Sorry, there is no question about what he is doing. He is a BACK YARD BREEDER (do a search on the forum here for back yard breeder to see what they are like and what they do to ruin the breed) and if there is anyway possible that you can return the pup and get your money back, please do so. Heck, I would go ahead and return the pup even if you can't get your money back. It will probably save you lots of heartbreak in future years with vet bills, possible temperament issues, etc. Then do your research first, learn about the breed, how to raise them, how to train them, etc. and then, and only then, purchase or adopt or rescue one.

He should have given you a complete vet schedule of vaccinations that are due for this pup. The pup should NEVER have received a shot so early. There are tons of red flags about this that we are trying to advise you about. Are you not listening?

One other bit of advice.....if you do plan on keeping the pup, please get her spayed as soon as your vet says it is possible. You should not breed a back-yard bred animal.......

Re: I need some advice please...training a young puppy

I agree with the advice to take this pup back, whether you can get your money back or not. Breeders like this should not be encouraged. If you had known better, you would not have taken this pup until she was at least 8 weeks old, or not at all. That's why it's important to study BEFORE you get a pup, not after.

People like this "breeder" should not be breeding dogs at all. You are likely to spend far more on vet bills due to the pup being from unscreened parents than you spent on the pup.

A good trainer can train the OWNER what to do with the puppy. I know it's recommended that a pup stay with it's litter until it's 8 weeks...but a dog is not ruined if it's taken away sooner - it just means more work on the owner's part. I got my first Rott at 6 weeks and he was wonderful with people and other dogs...because I took over the socializing and training as soon as I got him. Legend I got at 7 weeks...and honestly, I'm a pretty firm believer that that is the perfect age to bring a pup home -- provided you know what you're doing and are able to teach him the boundaries as well as continue socialization.

SO -- the reason I suggested the OP get a trainer immediately is so they can learn what to do with the dog -- as it sounds like the breeder will not be a good source of information for them.
