Re: 1st cycle How Light?

It's typically not an issue of the first heat being "lighter" than others....more that the timing can be different (how long it lasts).

Some bitches are very clean and you almost never see any drops (they clean them all up).

Others have minor spotting on the first day or so, and then they really get going.

From what you've said, I would say "yes, this is her first heat." Her age is right. Now you must keep her away from all intact males until she is done (about 3 weeks).

Re: 1st cycle How Light?

She's likely just starting, and the flow will increase during the next week. Chili tends to have "moments" during the day where the flow will be increased, then subside for awhile. I don't use doggy britches, because I'd prefer she learn to keep herself clean, but there's certainly no crime in using them if it bothers you. I've found restricting access to some areas of the house and a well placed blanket prevents most of the drips on floors, etc., and Chili will even clean those if she notices. Chili's first heat lasted a FULL 4 weeks.

Make sure she does NOT go outside, even in a fenced yard, unattended. I've had no problem taking Chili on her regular walks, but we do not tend to have dogs running at large, etc. I also don't take her to places where space might be "tight" and intact males might be present (pet stores) or to parks....we go to class because all dogs are well managed, and for quiet walks in the neighborhood, rides in the car...but everywhere else is put on hold for the duration.

I do the same, and for the same reasons. In classes where the instructor allows intact inseason bitches to still train, we have two pairs of "pants:" a lovely blue gingham, and the sexy all black ones.

If you choose to use doggie pants, you can find them at higher end pet stores. Buy a box of human panty liners and use those, it'll help keep the pants cleaner. And most important, DON'T forget to take them off before you send her out to pee!

Re: 1st cycle How Light?

I'm nervous as hell because Serena is almost 10 months old and any day now it could happen. I was petting her the other day and noticed a large amount of fur on the floor when I was done. I guess that blowing her coat is a sure sign. Just in time to start with our new conformation trainer.

Very typical, especially with their first season. She may be "off" for a few days, it does affect some bitches this way. Others go through their first cycle without batting an eye.

Our girls normally blow their coat about 30 - 40 days prior to the start of their cycles. Gives you a good clue as to what is about to happen
