9 wk rottie eating grass!

We are feeding our 9 wk rottie Nutro nat choice for large puppy. I heard that when they eat grass it settles their stomachs, but when he gets fed he just chomps away at it. So I think he likes the Nutro. Is he missing something from this brand that is essential to him? We also feed him 3 times a day and he gets treats as well. Do we need to feed him more? Should I switch his treats to Nutro as well?

Re: 9 wk rottie eating grass!

I'm not a nutrition expert, but I can tell you that Boris will graze like a cow whenever he gets the chance. Hilda only nibbles a little grass now and then.

We live in a desert area, and Boris' yard has no grass in it. We have some grass out front, and if he is allowed out there, down goes the head and he starts grazing. If we go to a park where there is lush grass, for a reward, I let him lay down in the shade, and he starts munching away.

I don't think puppy food-even the large breed- is necessarily the best for a pup. And I think there probably are better foods than Nutro. But the grass thing probably isn't because of diet.

Even on Canidae my boys graze. It generally doesn't make them vomit so I just let them do it. Logan does have all grass poops some days.

Re: 9 wk rottie eating grass!

I also feed my Dylan Nutro Natural but am fortunate enough that he has a cast iron stomach and also feed him Natural Choice and a few other foods I found recommended here. He loves the variety (but not all dogs can tolerate this type of feeding) so I mix and match them.

Dylan will try to eat grass, sticks and actually pull up weeds acting like a madman if given the chance. It's a big game to him and I have to carry a toy when we're outside to stop him. It's not a matter of lack of nutrition for him but his high energy way of saying, let's play, let's play!!

Re: 9 wk rottie eating grass!

Grass eating is quite normal, I even cultivate a little patch for the purpose, which I frequently hose clean. Dogs or puppies could upset their tummies by gobbling, they swallow lots of air, this could cause the grazing response.

However, one should always be on the lookout for continued signs of discomfort, so one can have early warning of a dog becoming seriously sick, bloat is particularly dangerous, leaving one little time to react.

Puppy nutrition is a subject that I will leave to better informed people than me.

Re: 9 wk rottie eating grass!

We often compare our boy with a cow cause he grazes so much! It doesn't seem to bother him unless a blade tickles his throat - then up it comes. Other than that it's really no prob though. Our pup (13 weeks) love grass and eats any leaves she can get a hold of. Just an FYI though - Nutro Natural isn't the greatest food - although better than many supermarket brands. Meds was on Nutro Natural for Large Breed, too, but bf recently switched him to Nutro Ultra, and let me tell you - what a difference! No more eye boogers, extremely shiny coat, and much better poop/digestion. Just something to keep in mind - there are great threads on Foods in the Nutrition section!

Thanks everyone I am new to this website. I will keep the nutro ultra in mind. Nutro Nat is what the breeder had him on and he was doing good so we continued with it. We have only had him 3 weeks so we are still getting used to his personality!!!

Re: 9 wk rottie eating grass!

Both of our dods graze quite often. MoJo is a 5 year old rottie and Floyd is a 6 month old lab rott mix, (both are rescues). MoJo will vomit on a rare occasion, and Floyd seems to have no problems with grazing yet. We feed nutro and canidae. Both are healthy and very active.

I have known my dogs to eat grass over the years..its normal I think...I dont know why they do it but..they do it....but its not a common thing for them to do it, meaning they wouldnt do it everyday or every other day..its something you find them doing it once in a while..

Re: 9 wk rottie eating grass!

I have a pot of "kitty grass" planted for grazing. Luna (Rottie) loved it, and so does Chili (Rottie). I've had lots of dogs over the years, and the Rotties are the only ones that love to graze. Kitty grass is a combo of wheat, barley, and oat grass that is smooth-bladed and fertilizer/pesticide free so my dog can graze away. There are lots of vitamins in fresh grass.

I once asked my vet if it means anything when my dog eats grass? She said "yeah, it means grass tastes good".

Re: 9 wk rottie eating grass!

I've had one frequent grazer and one occasional grazer, I noticed with my occasional grazer she only does it when its hot outside and she is sunning herself so I wonder if she chews it for the moisture in the grass because she doesn't feel like getting up to get a drink.

Re: 9 wk rottie eating grass!

i dont advise feeding him more. You don't want to over feed your puppy. Some dogs just like to eat grass. yes it is true that they eat it to settle their tummies but usually if they are eating it for their bellies they will throw up shortly after eating it. My rott eats grass all the time plus bark, rocks, stick and whatever else. I don't know why he does it either. He gets fed plenty and gets treats. You are not doing anything wrong. I don't know much about that brand of food. We don't go over board on the food. We don't buy them the "Brand Name" food. The other ones have just about the same stuff.
