White toenails

My two 5 1/2 month old Rottweiler pups have toenails on their front paws that have turned white. They are brothers, and one of them had a toenail turn white when he was 3 1/2 months old. Now, the other one has two toenails that have turned white. I feed them Natural Balance Potato and Duck dry dog food, 1 1/2 cans of Natural Balance Duck and Potato canned dog food, and Nupro powdered supplement every day. I also give them some fruit (apricot, pumpkin, or banana) each day, and raw, organic chicken two to three times a week. Has anyone else experienced this with their Rottweiler puppies or have any idea what is going on? My vet says he has never seen this before. Could it be heriditary or nutrient deficiency?

Re: White toenails

Is it just the nails or are the hairs around the toes turning white too?

Re: White toenails

It is just one toenail on each dog; the hair has not turned white.

Re: White toenails

It is just one toenail on each dog. The white toenail is on the front paw of each dog but on different places. The hair shows no signs of turning whilte.

My 7mo rott has a white toenail too. It's nothing to worry about unless you have a show dog.

Do you know what causes it?

Re: White toenails

My dog recently had one toenail turn half white. Not sure what it is, we think it might be a fungal infection?. When I clip the nail, where it turns black-white, its looks different. Like maybe he stubbed his toe, and the blood vessels dried up are growing its way out?

Whichever it is, it hasn't harmed the structure of his nails. If its fungus, I've been treating it with Oil of Oregano, if its something to do with stubbing his toe, it will work its way out as I clip. I looked at it today, and it does look like its getting blacker again. This has been going on for about 1.5 months.

I asked around, nobody knew what it could be, and i'm not going to put him on antibiotics.
