Choke Collar??

I have a female Rottie (Dixie) that is 12 wks olds. We are using an adjustable nylon collar which is working fine. At what age do I need to switch to a choke chain..??

If your nylon collar is working fine then don't change at all! I personally don't like choke chains for training and she's really young at this point. Do you have her in puppy classes? Such a fun age - she's a little sponge soaking up everything you can teach her

Re: Choke Collar??

When Dixie goes to puppy classes you might want to use the Choke chain! She is still a baby, the soft collars are good for identification hangers.. When starting her training, the choke(no prongs yet) will work just fine!
Good luck with your girl!!!!

Re: Choke Collar??

Sorry, I disagree with marianne - only use a training collar if your dog needs it, and then use the type that works on your dog (choke chains are not suitable for every dog). Not every dog needs one, and any puppy class that encourages the use of a choke chain (or any correction collar, for that matter) is a puppy class to avoid IMO. Puppy training should be all about positive, motivational, fun training, not corrections. I wouldn't want to use a training collar on any dog younger than 9 months, and only then if necessary.

Re: Choke Collar??

Opps!!! Puppy classes..ok the soft nylon collars . Ok I'm getting forgetful in my OLD age. In any of the Obed classes we were instructed to use a chain collar.
