Fur color question.

My 10 week old puppy, bear, has brown undercoat showing on his ears. I've searched on here, and there seems to be few and far between answers, and when I can find them opinions varied quite a bit. I'm going to be honest, I'm a perfectionist. Probably borderline OCD, and this will drive me nuts! haha.... I know everyone's going to say to love him no matter what, and I'm sure I will, but for now it bugs me. Does anyone know if this really is just a puppy thing, as I've heard, or if this is going to stay like this?? Any help will be appreciated.

Re: Fur color question.

my puppy (18 weeks) still has the brown baby-fur undercoat, which i am assured will diminish over time. one point the breeder did make to me, however, is that kibble with a high copper content tends to give the dog's head a copperish tinge (he cited eukanuba as a culprit).

Re: Fur color question.

I'll have to look into that. I'm not sure if you mean his actual skin color, or his undercoat could be the result of high copper, but this is definitely undercoat showing. I've just gotten so many different responses that I'm not sure which is true. Thanks for the reply.

Re: Fur color question.

Ok, you made me look. Serena had brown on her ears at that age and now at 6 months it's gone. Hope this helps.

Re: Fur color question.

undercoats can be black, brown or gray.
most pups will have it showing around the ears between 8-24 weeks.
almost all i've seen has gone away...hidden by the top coat.
sometimes, when heavy shedding as an adult, you can see some of the undercoat showing around neck and when the coat comes back in, back to normal again.
on that same note...i once had a puppy born chocolate color...all of it...by 12 weeks he was regular black with rust markings. never knew why that happened...just did. and never again have i seen that.

Re: Fur color question.

Thanks for the replies. They've made me alittle more comfortable knowing the spots will almost definitely go away. He's such a good dog, and extremely smart, also perfect markings other than those on his ears, so overall I'm happy him.
