Lightbulb my puppy is SO hyper

So Boomer is now 9 weeks old. He's doing great in his crate over night still getting up a few times to go out which is great. Well, in the morning when I take him out for the day, he starts going nutty. He jumps up on me and all over the pace, he starts chasing the cats..which he never does during the day, he tries biting my arms and ankles, running through the house, jumping on my children which I fix REAL QUICK. I have to take him for a walk/jog first thing in the morning w/ my kids to try to drain some bottled energy. He wants to bit and chew EVERYTHING. I know I have to stop this early because of the size he will be soon enough. Could some one please help me on how to correct this hyper behavior at 5 AM? Thank you.

HeHeHe, get used to it! He is a PUPPY!!! That's what a good, healthy, fun-loving pup does! As you are doing, channel his energy into other exercise, and start doing some little obedience things with him. You have many months of this to go through.

Read up on a lot of the other posts in this forum, he is acting just like most rottie pups do!

There's nothing to "correct" because Boomer's not doing anything wrong. He simply behaving like a healthy puppy should.

Getting up to take him outside for a walk is the thing to do

Re: my puppy is SO hyper

Totally puppy behavior!! My new guy-well not so new now-he's 15wks.-gets up at 5:30 am, and at that time-he thinks the whole world needs to be up and playing. At first he would jump all over my older girl(who LOVES to sleep in), and terrorize that cats-now we have a somewhat workable routine-up at 5:30-6am, out to potty, breakfast, then he gets either a marrow bone or stuffed kong-to keep him busy. He only gets this "special" treat in the morning, so I can actually wake up and drink a cup of coffee!!
Have Fun!!

Re: my puppy is SO hyper

Sounds great! I'm glad that all is "normal" LOL. The cats are "dealing" right now. I think it's just funny. I bought him a hard dog ball, he ignores it. Than I bought him a "rubber bone" with spikes on it by Heartz thatyou can put water in, he ignores it. LOL. Going to buy a Kong VERY soon. I'm loosing this toy battle. He's picky. LOL Thanks again

Re: my puppy is SO hyper

Thanks for reminding me why I DON'T want a puppy for a while!!!

As the others said, he is just being a pup. Just be sure to give him fun puppy stuff to do, like chewing on stuffed Kongs or other puppy toys.

Oh, and with a 9 week old pup, walking is great, just keep it short for now, and not to fast. You want to take it easy on his bones as they are still a little soft.

Good luck!!

Re: my puppy is SO hyper

Thank you for that not to fast part. I'm a jogger sometimes and didn't know if it would be okay if he jogged w/ me. Walking, we go around the block once and come back home. We do that 5 times a day. 6 AM, 9 AM, Noon, 3 PM, and 8 pm. Is this to much? We just go around the block that takes no more than 10 mins. Thanks

Well, if he's still on a tear, you might want to go around the block once or twice more! Walking is fine, but Boomer is too young for jogging.

An inexpensive "toy" many of my fosters like are rinsed plastic juice or milk containers or plastic soda bottles. They don't last long but the price is right. However, if Boomer is a chewer and an eater, these may not be the best for him as he might eat the pieces he chews off, so watch him. Maybe they'll be better when he's older.

Re: my puppy is SO hyper

Sounds to me like you are doing just fine. Training will help also. Dogs (rottweilers in particular) like to have a job, and need something to keep their minds busy too. Look for some toys that he will have to think and work to get to the prize in side!!
I use to stuff Kongs with layers of stuff, and jam it inside tight. Raelin would work on it for hours some times!! You can also fill and toss in the freezer, this works great when the teething starts!

Re: my puppy is SO hyper

Thank you for the advice. I've been watching "The Dog Whisperer" I love him. I've been learning about how to walk your dog to be the leader of the pack because I know Boomer will be big and I don't need him dragging me down the block later. He still tries to bite the leash as we are walking and tries to pull away, but I continue and he seems to "get it" after a while. He still whines when we leave the house, but then he gets exceited. So far so good. Thank you.

Re: my puppy is SO hyper

At that age, my dog didnt like toys.....he just liked people!!!!! Eventually he learned that fetching was fun....and tug-of-war became his all time favorite activity (again...involves people)

Rather than having him bounce and jump all over me...we did use a small stuffy which helped to redirect his attention...and used up some of his excess energy as he fearlessly followed and attacked it.

Like infants...patience is a virtue. Like infants...take some time to sit down and laff at what is going on....these dogs grow big really fast (they don't mature for a while..but they do grow big!!!)

Good luck.....when the dog is napping, read thru the puppy posts to see what other creative members have come up with for these active little ones.

Re: my puppy is SO hyper

My Blacky is the same, he's 1 year and two month now and very Hyper and really cute and clever. I have bought him so many toys and he loves them all. Some times he plays with two toys at the same time. He wakes me up at 5 in the morning as usual and wants to play. Thats when his day starts, breakfast, and his morning shower. Unfortunatly I cant take him for walks because its too hot were I live now meaning 48 degrees. so he stays inside in the A/C but runs around the villa daily. I have hierd him a special maid were he attends and takes care of him while I am out during work. Take Care all

Re: my puppy is SO hyper

My wife dreads 6:30am! This is when I leave for work. Serena and I get up at 5am, take a half hour walk then she follows me around the house as I get ready for work. At 6:30, I let her in our room, close the door and go to work. Call me evil but I love the sound of my wife being attacked by doggie kisses as I leave. Serena makes a great alarm clock for her. As soon as the kids get out of bed, it's on! She goes ultra nuts. On the mornings we are both home I'll either wear her out before my wife gets up or take her to the lake. Have fun with your perfectly hyper normal puppy.

Re: my puppy is SO hyper

Thank you all very much. I FINALLY bought him a puppy Kong. I fill it with the peanut butter filling and it keeps him "down" a little longer. I'm getting there with the toys. He does like his tug a war rope. I throw it down the hall and he fetches it and comes back. All day on and off. Bought a ball, no interest. Soon maybe. He's GREAT! Thanks again.
