She out-smells me!!!

My Me'Shyla is definately a character!
She's playful, sweet, and funny. We just click. She even nudges me when I press the snooze button too much. <--can't be late for her morning walk.

However, my 4 mo. old baby is getting too smart to trick for a treat.
I try to hide treats in my pocket but she smells them and immediately comes to me and sits down BEFORE i give the command. If I try to pretend like I have a treat and give the command she just lays down and looks up like "i know u didn't think i would fall for that one mom"

i think she's missing the point and im just as lost. she also sometimes gets aggressive when i run out of treats. i try to ignore her but she'll throw her body into me until I push her away. Then its war...to her.

Help! We're enrolled in obedience classes but when we get home its another story. Any suggestions?

Re: She out-smells me!!!

Just keep repeating "I'm the boss." If I see one of mine, Samson in particular, trying to guess what command I'm going to give, I purposely ask him to do something else. He also has a habit of copying whatever command I give to Gretchen. This earns him nothing from me by way of treats.

Gretchen also has a habit of sniffing the air around my hand and then looking around as if she's deciding whether the reward's "worthy" of her obeying. It can get frustrating sometimes, but I try really hard to not repeat myself and act like I have all the time in the world. Those are the times that I get a lot of backtalk from her.

I know she just looks at me sometimes when I get home and ask her to sit before opening her crate. I wait a few seconds and then leave. Twice now she's had me coming back every 5-10 minutes for 30+ minutes until she realizes she's not getting out until she obeys.

I agree with the observation made by some that the female rotties are smarter than the males, but I would add "they're more of a pill, though, than the boys."

Re: She out-smells me!!!

Gypsy is the same way when she smells treats she will sit, she does the same when I prepare her food, she sits before I tell her, I now make her do something else for the treat such as down, or stay, she now knows how to catch

Re: She out-smells me!!!

LOL!!!
you're absolutely right on that one.
sounds like patience is key once again

but when it comes to NILIF what do you do when your trying to ignore her and she's throwing a fit. I can't get up and walk out the room because she starts to run after me nipping at my pant legs.
(3 pairs of pajama pants ripped + scratches down my leg when im wearing shorts )

I'm pretty sure she is confused who is in charge. Any tips on that?

Actually, when Deja gets extremely tired and is "not cooperative" I have a command that we developed known as "down time". I will tell her that she and mom both need "down time" and she has been trained to go to her crate and she will usually nap. When we first started using this command she was not so affecionate of it, but now she seems to like her own space that none of the other dogs can bother her and mom leaves her alone also. There's no scolding, yelling, barking, etc. just simple time to be alone. The other command we use is "relax". With this command she has been taught to lay down on her side and totally be calm. While she is in this position, I check her paws, ears, eyes, stroke her, rub her belly, butt scritches, rub under her chin (this is her tickly spot...LOL), check her teeth...basically just help her understand that it's okay NOT to be constantly moving. After we do our "relax", she generally stays in that position, sometimes watching TV and sometimes taking a "cat nap". It just gets her going in the right direction! Good luck...and just keep redirecting...I know it seems like she will never learn, but she will!

Re: She out-smells me!!!

Don't carry treats. Ask her to sit, when she does, make a big fuss of running to the treat jar and give her one (I eventually use the "going to get the treat" game as an opportunity for heeling practice, but it's way to early for you to be doing that). Telling her you're the boss doesn't mean anything to a dog.

Oops - I should've added that this statement should be repeated in your head, not out loud. Of course the dog doesn't know any better, but it helps me sometimes to remind myself that I'm running the show, not them.

Re: She out-smells me!!!

When I see Serena anticipating a command, I instantly change it. I try to always keep her on her toes. At this age (6mo) If she is too tired to work I let it go, she's just a pup and we have plenty of time for serious work when she gets a little older. Like Spoiledbabies "down time", we have "nap time". She may not always think she needs it at first but I'm sure she appreciates when she wakes up refreshed and ready to go.
