peeing in cage

Hi I have a 8 week old puppy which I am crate training, he is peeing in his cage in the middle of the night and early morning then wimpers and crys. so my question is why is he peeing then crying. I do hear him the minute he wimpers and get up but he has already done his business. Any help is appreciated. Thanks for the help.

Re: peeing in cage

If it is about the same time every night, try setting an alarm for about 30 minutes before his accident. That was you can be proactive and let him out before he pees. It probably wont take more than a week before he will learn to let you know before he goes. Remember to praise and treat a lot when he goes outside!

Re: peeing in cage

Thank you, I thought about that but was afraid he would get in the habit of getting up that time every night, thought I might add 10 or 15 min each night so he doesn't get use to the same time.

Re: peeing in cage

For the first 3 weeks of having my puppy home, he was in his kennel at 10:30, I set my alarm for 1:30am, got up-went out to potty, then was up again at 5:30.
It work very well, we never had an accident in the crate. And now he sleeps from 10:30pm-5:30 am!! Happy Puppy Training!

Remember you have a baby...a puppy. During the first few weeks/months, you will need to maintain a schedule for him. This schedule will help him to learn to control his bladder. You cannot expect an 8 week old puppy to hold himself through the entire night. When I first got Deja (now 6 months) she used the crate also. We set a schedule and it helped train her NOT to use her crate. Our schedule consisted of last out at 10:30-11:00 PM, out at 3:00 AM and morning out at 7:00 AM. This allows the pup to be successful in his abilities...he simply cannot hold himself all night as a pup. As Deja got older, we eliminated the 3:00 AM out (remember, it took us 2 months for this to be successful) and now she holds it all night. She doesn't hold it all day though...I work but I also go home at lunch every day to let her out and feed her. And to date, no accidents during the day since 4 months of age. Pups require tons of work, patience and love...please remember this when you are training. He is trying so hard to please you...but it's up to you to set him up to be successful and not fail. Check out the stickies on puppy training and read the old posts, it should help you with your new rottie. Good luck with puppy training!

Re: peeing in cage

Thank you everyone for your help. I didn't expect him to hold it all night and the first week I had him he cried I got up and let him out, but it was this week that he started going potty then crying. Rencook, that seems to be Jacksons schedule as well, 1:30 am and up again at 5:30 am. I will set my alarm tonight for 1am and 5am and see how that works. He does great during the day, knock on wood no accidents, I do not work outside the home and take him out every three hours at least and of course our play time. I also have a 8 year old rott/shep mix, that we rescued 6 years ago, We crate trained her but that was a long time ago and we haven't had a puppy in many years. Love the site I think I've read almost everything, at least it feels that way.

Re: peeing in cage

He's crying afterwards because he doesn't want to be in a soiled crate. He's just a baby, and it will take time for his body to be mature enough to "hold" it longer and for his brain to realize that the soiled crate is a result of cause and effect.

If the idea of setting the alarm earlier is to shorten the time for him so you can get him out before he goes in the crate, then you need to move that 5 am up to 4:30 am (so it's a half hour earlier than 4 hours). You've shortened the time for the first potty, but not for the second.

Once he gets the keep the crate dry idea, then you can go back to adding 1/2 hour increments back in.

Re: peeing in cage

Great! I'm glad to hear it is working out. It won't take too long and before you know it he will be sleeping though the night :)
