Unhappy Puppie wont walk on leash

Hey i just got 2 rott puppies 2 weeks ago they are currently 10 weeks old, we have train them the basic ( sit, come here, no ). we would take the dogs on a walk with out the leash and they would follow us fine, but when me and my dad would put the leash on them they would just sit there and stare at us.

Re: Puppie wont walk on leash

as one person told me and it worked. get a very small thin light leash about 2-3 feet in length and let them run around the appartment/house for a few hours. make sure you supervise them to ensure nothing goes wrong!

Re: Puppie wont walk on leash

The pups have no clue what that strange thing on their neck is - so why not get a handful of yummy treats and call the pup to you and then let the pup go where ever his nose leads him (within reason - not out into the road or into a ditch!), all the while giving treats and make leash training as much fun as all the other stuff you're doing with him.

Put the leash on and let them drag it around out in the yard (or a fenced secure area) and make it FUN...

I know of folks with dogs that never see their leash or collar except for trips to the vet - you can imagine how much those dogs LOVE the leash and collar - NOT! They've commented to me about their dogs behavior with the collar & leash on and have asked us why our dogs don't act like that - well, DUH, we take them to places other than the vet, and we've TRAINED them!

Re: Puppie wont walk on leash

Here are some threads that should help you. You can also do a search yourself to find more information and training tips:

http://www.rottweiler.net/forums/pup...leash+training

http://www.rottweiler.net/forums/pup...leash+training

http://www.rottweiler.net/forums/tra...leash+training

http://www.rottweiler.net/forums/pup...leash+training

As far as having two puppies at one time, you have your work cut out for you. Please read the following and then decide if you REALLY want to keep two of them and be aware of the pitfalls of doing so if you are basically an inexperienced owner:

http://www.rottweiler.net/forums/pol...pies-once.html

Please do a search on "Two Puppies" and find even more information on this subject. I can only assume that you bought these puppies from a breeder that just raises them for money. Most, if not all, ethical breeders, would not place two puppies in the same household, knowing the problems that situation can create.

Read on here, get your puppies separated, make them bond to you instead of each other and ask a lot of questions. You need to be fully aware of how to train and raise them properly in order to defray any potential problems that can arise later on.

Are they both girls, both boys or one of each? (Your answer to this will bring a lot of other information to you from us).

Re: Puppie wont walk on leash

A breeder who lets two puppies go at the same time to the same home is not looking for brownie points on their soul. They are unethical and looking for profit over benefit of their dogs.

I'm sorry this sounds harsh, but you will do much better by your new pups if you learn, learn, learn all you can on these forums. Do as Sharon suggested- separate, train, exercise your pups separately and make sure they bond to YOU instead of each other.

I have seen two puppies more than once take over a house due to owners who lacked the knowledge it takes to do right by this situation.

Good luck to you and I honestly am hoping you will heed the advice on these forums and NOT TAKE OFFENSE to what is said. We only have the best in mind for you and your dogs!

Re: Puppie wont walk on leash

Hi bronieN'falco,

Welcome to the board! I am also in the Phoenix area - and it scares me to death that you found someone that would sell you two puppies at the same time - and especially if you got them both for a total of $700...unfortunately in this area there are only a few ethical breeders...and a lot of backyard breeders. I hope you got registration papers, health guarantees, and a contract with the puppies!

Anyway - I would strongly recommend that you get them into an obedience class ASAP!! As soon as you are a regular member, you can PM me and I'd be happy to give you some recommendations depending on your part of town. It's important with any dog, but especially a Rottie pup and ESPECIALLY littermate puppies to get them into a formal obedience class very young.

There are two Rottweiler clubs here in the Valley - and I'm involved with both of them...we'd love to have you join us! Our AKC club is putting on a Rally-obedience seminar on June 3rd in Central Phoenix...let me know if you would be interested in attending!

Being "nice" does not mean she has the best interests of the puppies (or you) at heart. It just means that she did her best to get rid of two puppies to one person. The fact that they were priced the way they were means that she was/is probably a back yard breeder with no thought to temperament, pedigree, health issues or the fact that she sold littermates to one person. Did she provide you with the health certifications for both parents (hips, hearts, eyes, elbows)? Did you see the sire and dam? Did you purchase the puppies on a contract with guarantees? Did she talk to you about crate training, obedience classes and socialization and the correct way to bring up two siblings?

Please read up on the problems associated with having two pups of the same age. You are a novice owner and could be in for some huge problems down the road as these pups mature and start thinking for themselves.

Are they both boys? Both girls? Or one of each?

So you don't know a thing about the sire's hips? Eyes? Heart? Same thing for the dam? Does she ONLY have hip certification? You have definitely bought these pups from a back yard breeder.

Being that your dogs are both males, you REALLY need to read up on the problems you could have raising both of them together. What you perceive as playing now, could/will turn into fighting later on as they start to mature and each of them desires the alpha position in their ranking.

Are you planning on neutering both of them? I certainly hope so, that is probably the only way you will be able to raise both of them without aggression problems.

Going to class will help a lot, but you also need to be sure that you train them individually inbetween classes. You need to keep them separated, not just loose in the same yard together. Plan on keeping them in classes for several years as they grow and mature.

try feeding a treat in your hand and see if the puupy will follow you with the leash on him without pulling or use a toy or a object that gets their attention.

Re: Puppie wont walk on leash

I noticed Gypsy will walk on a leash now if she thinks we are going bye-bye she loves the car, What I have been doing is leaving the leash on for a while and walking her downstairs or around the house. I havent done the treat thing, I was getting ready to take her and Chopper for a walk and a bad storm came through so tommorrow I will get them both out for a walk around the block that helped when Chopper was a puppy

You have to be a regular member before you can PM...just keep posting and you'll reach that status soon. As soon as you do, please contact me - I'd love to help you out with trainer referrals and help with any questions you might have....as well as help you get involved with local Rottie activities and the local clubs if you're interested.

As others have said, you REALLY have your hands full with TWO MALE dogs from the SAME litter and most likely from a BYB....so PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE keep up on their training...and make sure you've got a trainer that knows what they are doing. Keep reading the posts on here and let us all know if there's anything we can help you with - sometimes the advice may seem harsh...but I promise it's only because we all love the breed and have seen so many situations like yours go bad if the owners are not 100% committed to doing the right thing.

Best of luck!

This is a good idea. Also, once the pup starts walking, don't coddle him if he acts up with the leash. Just keep walking in a steady, confident manner. Your pup will soon learn to follow.

Sometimes I walk as may as 7 or 8 dogs of all ages and sizes at once. There is always one who has to balk, or lie down, or be silly. My solution is to ignore them and keep walking at the same pace. They keep up soon enough!

Your dogs are still young. They'll learn the ropes in no time!

Good luck, and please follow the other member's advice regarding raising littermates.
