when? 1st walk puppy

Im hearing all different stories on when we can walk new puppies. After what round of shots can they go outside? the third ?m the 4th? I've even heard not before 20 weeks by a reliable source. some say the rotty is more at risk at this young age than other breeds.

Re: when? 1st walk puppy

I would definitely wait until after the second shot as parvo can be a deadly disease for our dogs. This does not mean that you can't play in your yard, just don't want to be where any possibly infected dogs are or have been. Any "black and tan" dog seems to have a higher incidence of this disease.

Re: when? 1st walk puppy

You need to be careful when they are very young, but realistically, you NEED to socialize a puppy and you have to do so by taking them out and seeing the world they live in.

My rule of thumb is no dog parks .... period, not even for my adults. I will take my puppies to stores and carry them in when I can still do it because I am more interested in the sights, sounds and people, not meeting other dogs and animals.

Third set of shots, they are good to go in my eyes, however, again, no busy dog parks. I am also intending to titre with any new dogs beyond their first set of shots, so I am still going to be taking puppies out, just doing so carefully.

I also send my pups out to dog-friends (ie ... people with dog experience who are not going to put the pup in a scary or dangerous situation) for sleepovers so they are used to being handled by other people in different places. This I start at about 13 - 14 weeks old.

BUT, if you wait to do any real socializing or training until 20 weeks or 5 months old, you will miss the boat on a lot of imprinting and socializing time and you may have some difficulties down the road.

Re: when? 1st walk puppy

Here is a good thread to read:
http://www.rottweiler.net/forums/pup...=socialization

More pups (dogs) die from lack of socialization than lack of vaccination!

Take the pup out and about the sooner the better, but use common sense!!!
Good luck with your pup and have a happy and fun socialization!!

Re: when? 1st walk puppy

Both of the Rottie pups I've had were out and about beginning when I brought them home, at 7-1/2 weeks and 8 weeks respectively.

I did call around to the local vet's offices and asked if they were seeing a higher than normal incidence of parvo, as that is a special concern with a Rottweiler. They had not, and off we went.........

We walked in the street instead of on the sidewalk to avoid any deposits left by other dogs.

We went to friend's homes who we knew had vaccinated, healthy and puppy friendly dogs, and we invited them to ours.

We went to the BEACH!

We put a crate pad in a shopping cart and went to Target a few times, and Home Depot a few times.

We went to the local community college campus and watched a zillion kids play soccer.

We went to Jiffy Lube and said Hi! to the guy in the "pit", LOL!

We went to visit the horsies at the barn.

That's an example of the first 3-4 weeks, and we expanded our adventures after that to include Petco, Petsmart, started our first puppy class, etc.

It's really important to get them out and about as early and as much as possible. You want them to see cars and trucks, bicycles, and strollers, funny looking animals (chickens, ducks, horses, cows, cats, birds), runners and walkers, experience little kids screaming, babies crying, people in funny clothes, funny hats, carrying umbrellas, and on and on and on.

It's also good to have them walk over different surfaces, like a plastic tarp, a piece of chain link fencing laying on the ground, astroturf, climbing over boards and logs.......the list is endless!

As a rule of thumb, keep your puppy away from any place that many dogs frequent and go everyplace else! Have fun with your puppy!

Re: when? 1st walk puppy

Ditto...and we go to big dog performance classes/practice "just because"...drop in on advanced obedience classes just to say hi (the trainer is a friend)...and go to the vet for no other reason than to get cookies. We started short "get used to the leash" walks the day the dogs came home. We stay out of grassy areas and avoid unknown dogs....so far so good

Re: when? 1st walk puppy

I wouldnt take your pup anywhere where lots of unknown dogs have been, go the vet for cookies, stand out side Walmart and let people of all ages and races feed and pet your dog and invite friends over with well behaved, vaccinated dogs over to play, the first 4 months are an extremely important inprint period and should not be missed out on, but Parvo is a very real fear. My dog came down with Parvo at almost 4 months, 1 week before her 4th vaccination, she was at an emergency clinic for 9 days and was such a sad emotional, and heartbreaking (not to mention expensive)experience that I wouldnt want anyone to have to experience it for themselves. She is fine now and a healthy 15 month old. It is exactly one year ago that this happend and I still tear up picturing her with all those tubes. There are plenty of socialization options, like I said invite friends over, expose her to as many different people as possible, people wearing hats, kids, bikes, cars etc, just dont let her wander around where unvaccinated dogs could have been, Parvo is very hardy and can live very long in the enviorment, I dont want to scare you I just wanted to share my personal experience. Good Luck and enjoy puppyhood
