biting!!!

We got a 8 weeks old puppy two weeks ago. All he wants to do is to bite. I don't know what to do nothing seems working. We have another male who is almost 2,5 years old never put his teeth on us. Because I have never had biting nipping problems with the older one puppy's behavior scaring me.He is biting the older one too, he is not giving him free time he is always on him biting nipping. I really need suggestions how to stop him.

Re: biting!!!

duggan used to bite or nip when he was a puppy and i started to get scared but the breeder told me not to show him any fear and make sure he knew who was boss. He quit that really really fast and never did it again after a week. Training will be good to...i did not do that and i dont have any problems with duggan i wish i would have taken him through it after reading all the stuff on here.

Re: biting!!!

Tali,

the pup is 10 weeks old and is probably going to chew for sometime, especially when he's cutting his teeth.he needs all types of chew toys, kongs, ropes, etc.and you will need to keep after him to correct him when he slips up,which will be often.it gets better the older they get.also sign him up for puppy kindergarden.the socialization and training will be very helpful.

Re: biting!!!

You need to start with a beginner obedience class. Even if you feel the dog knows many of the behaviours, I'd be willing to bet my dog's registrations that he will not do things the first time (meaning only ONE comand...not "sit, sit sit!") EVERY time, and around high distraction (like a class environment).

Starting at the beginning is usually a good place. Learn to read your dog, learn about dog behaviour and have an experienced instructor show you the errors that your making, how they affect your dog's behavior and how to correct them.

Look for a group class, not private lessons. In my opinion, EVERY Rottweiler needs to attend group classes. It helps with socialization and distraction training. Private lessons are for specific problems or people at advanced levels who are going on to compete and need more intense instruction. And in my twisted opinion, chain store classes are NOT the place to go (though that argument has already been had in other threads).

Re: biting!!!

It's never too late to start training a dog!

You'll find that the classes will help tire him out too.....mental stress does wonders for tiring out dogs!

Start with a beginners class, learn all the ins/outs of training and then if you are both enjoying it, move on to other levels. Who knows, perhaps you'll decide that you two really enjoy obedience and go out and try the CD!

Re: biting!!!

I got him all kind of chew toys. They occupy him for a while then he starts biting. He usually bites my older rottie.Older one Tali growls at him snaps at him but he just doesn't stop. He stops for a while and he attacks him back. I already started training him. He knows how to sit and down, and he comes when you call him. Today was his first day to be on the leash he did really good.I am so amazed with his smartness. Tali is always with us when I train him should I train him alone or is it better to have both dogs at the same time?
Also do you think spraying apple bitter is a negative reinforcement?

Re: biting!!!

I use a plastic lemon and he gets it right in the face. When he was 8 weeks he would dive bomb us on the couch one hit with the lemon with a stern "No" now all I have to do is show him the lemon and he protests with a few barks walks away and finds his toy. Unfortunately, I live in AZ and everything here stops for the summer it is 106 today and it isn't even considered summer weather yet! I'm trying to get up at 5:00am and get him out but it was 99 degrees at 11:00pm last night and the ground was still very hot. I swim my dogs to burn some of their energy, my only alternative is PetsMart and I want Tango to have one more shot at 15 weeks before I enroll him. It's not my favorite place but its better than nothing else.
