Re: Puppy's weight??

Sage is 8 months old now and weighs in at 72lbs. She looks healthy and the vet said she is doing well. I am wondering how much more she will gain. Any ideas?

Re: Puppy's weight??

I am somewhat frustrated with my pup. Gaia is 17 weeks and she is only 22 lbs. I am goingto try and visit her sisters and brothers through the guy that sold her to me... I just want to see how big they are and possible even find her parents just to see how big they are.
I am either assuming that the guy that sold her to me either gave me the wrong age at the time I got her or he lied to me 'bout being a "purebreed". Vet kept saying she is a healthy pup so far but honestly... I am just frustrated by the numbers and stats you guys are posting here. Pups that are 2-4 weeks younger than Gaia and their weight are 20-25 lbs over hers?... it doesn't seem right to me. Something's funky...

Kira was only 24lbs at 17weeks. She is the runt, she is now 6 1/2 month and about 50lbs. As long as she looks proportional and healthy (not showing ribs), you have nothing to worry about. Is she behaving normal, eating normal, and has energy? If she is healthy there is always a chance she will catch up. Did you see her parents?

Re: Puppy's weight??

Didn't get a chance to see her parents... not yet. Vet told me she was looking good and healthy. She plays a lot and gets the 'zoomies' alllllllll the time. She does sleep quite a lot though once her energy drains down... Yesterday, after reading all of your posts I honestly got worried and went ahead and bought some some Ester-C, Vitamin E and that Omega 3 Fish oil jusdt in case. I've been feeding her Royal Canine Puppy (Maxi formula... sorry, we don't have Canidae, or those other "super premium quality food" here on the island... and having it shipped here is much more expensive than the food itself...) Ocassionally I've been feeding some carrots, apples and eggs with her food.
As far as her ribs... there is no visual of the ribs. I can feel them though. Looking at her top side she seems to form a figure 8 (kinda like the old style coca-cola bottles).

Other than that, I guess I'll have to keep on hoping she will catch up.
-------
On a another little quick side-note: I am so proud of her! Today I did her nails (the dremmel way... well... actually it was a drill with a sandpaper-drum) And she behave sooooooooooooo great... she was so calm... I was speechless afterwards since I had read here that most of them tend to 'figh-back' in one way or another. I must say confess though that a got to one 'quick' that I didn't foresee and she immediately retrieved her paw (please don't flame me and cut me some slack this one time, it is my very first time I get to do this...) But even after that she behaved great. I am really proud of her. She starts next Thursday her obedience tranning classes too.

Re: Puppy's weight??

My Jasmine is a petite girl as well, a week ago at the vet (8 months) she weighed 63 lbs, ribs not showing but could be felt. I asked if her weight was ok and he said that she was exactly where he likes to see larger breeds. This vet has never had a good beside manner with people and rarely has anything nice to say but he's an excellent doctor so I deal with it, on our way out he said to one of his techs "Now that's a beautiful, healthy dog." I was elated

Re: Puppy's weight??

Our girl Guapa is 8 months old, and last week at the vet's she weighed in at 105 lbs. Not an ounce of extra weight on her - she has a great waistline and you can feel the ribs. We were astounded she weighed that much, but she's rock-solid!

She has way more energy than I have, but she's helping me and Max, our 6-year-old male rottie, keep our waistlines under control. ;-)

We've been feeding her Nutro Natural Choice Large Breed puppy since she came home at 8 weeks, but her stool has never been real solid, so this week we're transitioning her to Bil-Jac's LB puppy. She seems to like it better; no results on the stool, yet. Of course, not chewing every stick she gets her mouth on would probably help the stool, too...she's incorrigible!

Re: Puppy's weight??

A full grown female should not weigh that much!!!
A Rottweiler is not a giant breed....and their bones and joints were not made to carry this much weight while this young.

I would suggest you get your pup onto a better quality food..better than Nutro or Biljac.
Try feeding a top quality food such as Innova or Canidae or Wellness, etc. and cut back on the amount you are feeding. You want her growing slow...and steady...no huge weight gains in short times.

Did you meet your pup's dam or sire?

We're going to look into a better food...for one, the Bil-Jac has produced constant noxious gas clouds - killer, really. Five days into it, and I'm about to cry uncle!

Yes, we met both the sire and dam, and both are big dogs. While I agree that she's extra-large, and it's possible I could be feeding her too much, I believe that her ultimate size is a product of her genetics, not how much or what I feed her. As I see it (and I suppose I could be wrong...), the only way feeding could affect her size is if she were undernourished, and that would stunt the growth. We started the feeding according to the manufacturer's recommendations for quantity, and then raised or lowered depending on how much she eats (we always give her less than she wants...she's got a huge appetite). Whenever we've tried to cut back on the food, we start to see ribs within a couple days - and that's a no-no.

That said, she's grown quite steadily - she's averaging (and has since she came home) about 3.2 lbs per week. No large growth spurts or leveling off periods (yet). She goes to the vet regularly, and aside from comments about what a big girl she is, he sees nothing that should be of concern.

Regardless, we're keeping an eye on her and not letting her get really hard exercise or get into activities that could potentially cause her injury.

Jim

Re: Puppy's weight??

My dog, Roley, is 15 weeks old, 19 inches tall and 44 lbs. At this rate he may be a largish dog I guess. Does this sound normal enough? Most of the charts I've looked at have him on the big side. We live on a beach and he is very active and fit looking (chunky and muscular). Martin

Re: Puppy's weight??

Sebastian is almost 5 1/2 months and he weighed in yesterday at the vet at 63 pounds; but he is tall so he still looks underweight. He eats 3 cups food in am and 3 cups in pm.

He should look underweight he is a pup.
That's an awful lot of food going into your pup!!!
What food are you feeding?
I've never fed a pup or an adult dog this huge amount of food...but it depends on the food. A better quality food you will need to feed much less.
