Puppy Prong Collar

How early can I start using a prong collar when walking my rott? It's amazing how strong he is now.

Re: Puppy Prong Collar

I'm not sure how old your puppy is, but in my opinion, if he is a puppy, I would not use a prong collar. Puppy training should be all about fun. Try using a lot of treats and make it fun. If you are not in puppy classes, maybe you should consider them, they are great. :o)

Re: Puppy Prong Collar

NEVER I no longer use prong collars even for adults but even back then I would never ever put a prong on a pup under 6 months old and likely not on one less than 8 months old

I teach babies how to walk nice usingpraise, treats, toy tugging and other rewards.

Re: Puppy Prong Collar

Yep. "Never" is the right answer as far as I'm concerned, prong collars do not belong on puppies. You should be training him how to walk politely with rewards (treats, play, etc.), not putting a band-aid on the problem by using a prong. Are you in training classes? If not, you should be, this is exactly the sort of thing that training classes teach you how to do, and training classes are not optional with dogs like Rottweilers.

Re: Puppy Prong Collar

We trained Oscar on a flat buckle collar until he was 10 months old and then we went to a prong. And the only reason we went prong was because he discovered his size, is a serious teen and was ripping my arm out of the socket on walks, despite his ob training. It worked like a charm but I'd NEVER have used it on him as a younger pup.

As well, if u ever go with a prong, don't use it until you've been trained on how to use it properly. It's not used like a choke chain, you don't correct with it, you let the dog correct himself. Have a knowledgable trainer show u how to use it when your dogs an appropriate age.
