Puppy Exercise

How much exercise is too much for a 10 week old puppy? My puppy and I walk 1 1/2 miles daily and he is pooped when we get home, but is excited and curious during our walks. I recently read that puppies shouldn't get too much exercise.... I don't know what too much is. Should I scale back? It is a way for me to socialize him as well as provide him with exercise.
Thanks

Re: Puppy Exercise

Others chime in, but I would say that might be a bit to much for a 10 week old pup....

Re: Puppy Exercise

For myself I would say that's a bit much.I take my boy on three short walks a day. When I need to get him in more social areas we drive to them and then explore. Also there are lots of kids that wear him out :0) ps my boy is 12 weeks.

Re: Puppy Exercise

Most of the books I have read seem to have the opinion that in their first year, puppies get enough excercise from just playing. Walking places unnessesary strain on their developing joints and can lead to HD and ED problems.

I have a 7 month old female and we do a walk or two a week around my smallholding. She gets plenty excersise playing with my 1 1/2 y.o White Shepherd.

I also heard/read somewhere that it was'nt good for the joints if you walk them too far expecially when your pup is still young.! x

Is this done in one walk or two, or more? How long does it take to make the full 1 1/2 mile walk?

You said there is socialization going on while out walking - are you stopping to play with doggie friends along the walk route?

Aside from this, what other exercise does the pup get? Zoomies in the house and/or yard?

Personally, I'd be exhausted after a 1 1/2 milewalk, but I'm LAZY ...

Re: Puppy Exercise

Thanks for all the feedback... also, I failed to add that we walk at a leisurely pace... not the pace I walk when exercising myself!!
