Almost 10 weeks old

Picked up our 9-week-old pup last Sunday. She's wonderful. Doing well with potty training and sit and recall using treats. One problem. Wanting to play with/bite our feet and pants legs, which is dangerous for me and her when I'm walking across the room. I've been redirecting her with toys. Wasn't getting any better. Switched to light pinch on back of neck and gruff "No." Didn't work. Yesterday I started saying exaggerated, kind of loud "Ouch" and she stopped.

Is that an okay technique? Having a hard time teaching my DH how to do the right "Ouch." Kind of hard for a 60-YO 6'3" man to learn how to squeal like a girl. LOL. Any other suggestions would be appreciated.

Re: Almost 10 weeks old

Works with some pups. My first dog thought it was GREAT that he could make me squeal, and did it more! The little one I have right now stops right away if i give a yelp.

Also, after saying ouch or yelping, ignore the pup for a few moments, so it is really reinforced that the biting is not fun! Then go back to playing like nothing happened.

Re: Almost 10 weeks old - followup

The mouthing/biting problem I wrote about earlier did not improve. In analyzing her reactions, I think we were making it worse by trying to play ball with her, tossing toys, etc. She focused in on our hands or pants legs more than the toys. So I've stopped that and just take her outside for a walk, practice "sit" if she starts biting pants legs, give her treat when she sits and then lots of praise and walk away quickly. There is improvement there. She is beginning to sit immediately anytime she approaches me. Back to her play crate indoors when the outside walk is finished. She is totally happy to play with her toys inside her crate, which is in the doorway to my office, so she can see me and I can talk to her while I get some work done.

I'm sharing this so maybe it will help others. Each pup is very different.

Re: Almost 10 weeks old

every pup is very diifferent!! Boy is that really true. our other dogs as puppies had no problems. the no bite with a yelped worked great.

now they were different breeds as well. our rottie puppy totally different its like nite and day with him.

we had to use yelp and then say no bite. redirecting sometimes worked and ingore. but evently we had to use bitter apple to get our point across.

now with using the "ouch" then "no bite" and a small sqirt of bitter apple. he finally got the message. then we could redirect him with a chew and say "GOOD BOY" Chew your bone or toy. JMO

Now when he hears " No Bite" and " OFF" He listens. now he can be the loving puppy he wants to be ALL the time.

Hope this helps you. good luck and congrats on your new puppy.

Re: Almost 10 weeks old

Your pup is a BABY! Problems do not go away in a week. They do not grow up in a week. Patience is virtue. Redirect, redirect, redirect...and you will probably do so for months! Wear crappy clothes when home. SHe wants to chew, give her something to chew, hence...redirect. Show her what she CAN chew on.

There is no quick fix, unless you want to crush your puppy's spirit. She does not know what is expected of her yet. Heck, she may have JUST learned her name! Does she know what "NO" means yet? Probably not, so why not work on that in all your situations.

Groupie: I don't think you really read my last post. Didn't expect the problems to go away in a week. Analyzed what was making it worse and now have improvement. Are you REALLY suggesting that someone wear crappy clothes so their pup can chew on them?? No thanks. I wouldn't think of following that advice. This is NOT my first Rottie but this pup is definitely more of a chewer than my last girl who blessed us with her presence for 13 years.

Re: Almost 10 weeks old

My boy was/is an avid chewer the only thing that worked with me, so that he would know what to chew and what not to was redirection. Also, if he got in a crazy puppy mood, where all he wanted to do was attack me, I would walk away from him, if that still didn't work I would shut a door between us for like 10 seconds then come out and redirect him to an approriate chew toy. He always waited on the other side of the door for me and seemed to calm down in that time frame. If I remember correctly this only took a few weeks till it stopped completely, and definitely got better during that time.

Sweetbrew, what you do is working for us too. The thing that we've had to learn with this girl is not to participate in playing with the toys with her. That hypes her up and gets her focused on chewing our hands, feet, everything. Now I'm just giving her a toy to redirect and taking my hands out of view, talking to her, telling her what a good girl she is. Really has reinforced in my mind that each pup is different. Our last girl loved to play ball from a very early age and we used that to wear off excess energy. So I started that with this little one when we brought her home and it was leading to major mouthing issues. Hopefully we can play ball and retrieve a few months from now, just not now.

My vet told me to use the water pistol, he quickly changed his loon when he saw that Nikita looked at water as the best toy around. Now at 11 months she takes over the sprinkler in the summer time and wont even let the other dogs share the water with her. The vet finally told me to gently but firmly hold the muzzle when ever Nikita tried to bite and tell her NO. She stopped bitting after the 2nd time of holding her mouth shut for less then 2 seconds each time she bit.

Lol i can associate with that! as a child i wouldnt share the sprinkler or hose pipe with none of my buddies!!! I have tried holding her mouth shut but this tends to wind her up and she ends up nipping and getting aggro! She has none of it .. xxx
