Itching & scratching

My 12wk old rott is itching alot, he seems to be itching everywhere, 2wks ago i gave him advantage for fleas and they are now all gone, I also gave him de-wormer, they both seemed to work but he is still itchy, he seems to itch EVERYWHERE, he doesnt do it constantly, but alot. I comb him out with a flea comb and he has alot of dead dry skin specially on his lower back area, I feed him Nutro Natural Choice Large Breed Puppy Food, he eats 3-31/2 cups a day. Any suggestions?

Re: Itching & scratching

You might want to switch to a higher-quality diet and/or a diet with different protein sources.

Re: Itching & scratching

Has he had a bath with a good oatmeal based dog shampoo?

Give him a bath and rinse rinse rinse really well to make sure all shampoo is out of his coat.

I agree with spidey - might be the food...or environmental things.

Did you treat the environment for fleas...his bedding, vacuum the carpets etc., Flea preventative and worming needs to be a constant, not a one off.

Re: Itching & scratching

I am dealing with the flea issue right now as well. I am going to begin using Advantage on the pup and the cats and we are treating the yard where she relieves herself as well. I may need to "bomb" the house as an initial process with all of this. We bathed her last weekend, and I used the flea comb on her to remove the fleas. She was better for a day or two, but now the poor thing is scratching and biting all over again. That is why I think she is picking them up from the yard. The cats do not seem to be bothered and I do not see fleas on them.

Re: Itching & scratching

the fleas are gone, the advantage worked very well. It might be the food, I did give him a bath also. Can anyone recommended some good food for a 12wk old male rott?

Re: Itching & scratching

i would suggest asking your vet, sometimes puppies/dogs have skin problems due to the flea collars, and flea medicine over the counter. which will cause the itching and scratching.

hot spots are usually caused by food, meds or not getting all the soap out. asking your vet, may help in pin pointing the problem.

we have been fortunate, we have never ever had a flea problem. counting our lucky stars. having no carpet i think helps and washing there bedding weekly. garlic in their vitamins helps as well.

good luck for you and your puppy.
