How Large Will He Get ??

Hello Folks,

I was just wondering if there is anyway to figure out approximately how much a dog will weigh at maturity.Deuce, my 6 month old,is 70lbs as we speak. Is there a way to figure out how much he will weigh at 1 yr or at 2 yrs? I know this isnt a serious question, but as i look at him, I'm wondering if he's this big at 6 months, what is the top end weight going to be.

Thanks Dan

Did you see his sire and dam? That will give you some idea.

But, don't get hung up on what he might or might not be. Concentrate on helping him grow up into a model canine citizen.

Re: How Large Will He Get ??

My pup grew about 10 to 12 pounds a month until he was about 9 months. He seemed to grow at a slower rate after the 9 month mark. He is now 14 months and last weigh in at the vet was 110Lbs.

The vet just said 80% of his growing is done. After the 1st year, the muscular and skeletal systems start to mature. I interpret this being when the braod chest and head as well as that Rotti thickness starts to happen.

The people at my vet office said he may be 120 to 130lbs within the next year.

I hope that helps. I am a first time rotti owner. Do more of you more experienced owners/breeders agree with me??

His lineage will be the best indicator as to his adult size. If he was bred to breed standard, he should fall within the breed standard for height and weight. Some lines will reach their limits earlier than others but rotties are a slow maturing breed, taking 3-4 years to reach full maturity. My boy is 3-1/2 years old and I've seen a noticeable increase in fullness in him just over the past six months - when I thought he was done growing! He hasn't really changed in weight, just appearance.

Then your boy will likely be out of standard in terms of size. This is sad because he was bred by people who have no business doing what they're doing--ruining our breed.

Check the breed standard -- http://www.akc.org/breeds/rottweiler/index.cfm

However, now you know, so I'm sure you won't make that mistake again--buying from a breeder with questionable practices.

Even with your dog being out of standard, you can show him in AKC events, if you wish. It just won't be comformation.

Well thanks for the slap up side the head,I think.(ha ha). Ok,I'll admit to being suckered in by the thought of owning a very large rott.I see your point as far as keeping as close to the breed standard. Now that I have him, I'm just concerned that he's healthy and well mannered, which, knock on wood at six months he's pretty well behaved as long as you keep him occupied and dont allow him to get into trouble. Well thanks angelbunny for the reply.Hey,what's, you opinion on getting my pup microchipped? Look forward to your reply, but be gentle(ha ha). DAN

Re: How Large Will He Get ??

Since he already has 'one strike' against him in terms of purposely being bred to be oversized, I would definitely keep him on the very lean side to help prevent hip/elbow issues.

I have found that of dogs that I know now that I knew when they were young pups (various breeds), they were about half their adult weight at 6 months old. So, at 70 pounds at 6 months, you could end up with a 140 pound dog - pray it isn't the case and he got the 'short end' of the growth genes!

Giving your dog permanent ID--a tatoo or chip--is an excellent idea. It's a form of insurance--you never expect to need insurance, but it sure is nice to have it when you need it!

Even if shelter personnel or those in a vet's office might not have the scanner to read the chip (due to competing standards), having the tag on the dog's collar noting the dog is chipped might be helpful.

My rescue group chips all the dogs in our program. The chip is registered to the group with the dog's ID (noted on the chip's paperwork that's sent in). The ID is traceable through our records to the dog's owner.
