How to keep pup quiet?

My little guy is now 17 weeks. How do I get him to stay in his crate without making any noise? On the weekends I would like to sleep in until at least 9am. I usually get up and let out the dog around 6:30am and then put him back in his crate. When he doesn't want to be in his crate, he pushes his blanket to the side then scratches on the crate floor, or tries to jump around in his crate and make as much noise as possible. I try not to let him out when he does this b/c I don't want him acting this way. Any suggestions on how can I stop this?

Re: How to keep pup quiet?

What time do you put him in there? I know when our little girl gets up she usually has to go potty outside. They are still so little and can't hold it when they wake up. I feel blessed that she lets us sleep 'till around 8 a.m. IMO they don't really understand "weekend" schedule. They like their normal routine. My husband and I usually take turns getting up w/ her on the weekends and we then go ahead and take her for her morning walk and then she is usually ready to take a nap mid morning ... we then take one as well when we want a bit of extra sleep.

Good luck!!

Re: How to keep pup quiet?

I've read from others on this board that you should ignore the tantrum he's throwing in the crate. But even though you've let him out to do his business he's a ball of energy after a full nights sleep so it's hard to get right back into his crate. Someone else here will be able to give you some advice i'm sure.

I know this may not be a popular answer, but sometimes when I want to sleep longer, I will let Sasha get on the bed with me and she will sleep there by my side until whenever I decide to get up.

Re: How to keep pup quiet?

When you have a young dog, it's very much like having young children.... there is no sleeping in. Once your dog is more mature, you can expect him to relax a bit in the a.m.

Puppies need to evacuate... a 4 month old is capable of holding it over night, but asking a pup to hold it for several hours longer is simply asking too much.

Get up, let the pup out, give him a chew object and put him back up if you must sleep in.. IGNORE any noise... any reaction from you while the pup is in mid tantrum will only reinforce this unwanted behavior....

Often times, covering the crate with a sheet or light weight blanket will help you out... kind of like covering a parrot so it can sleep in peace... This has always worked for the pups I've raised.

With 4 dogs in my home, I can't remember the last time I slept until 8, let alone 9... more often than not, dogs start getting let out around 5:30 here...especially when there's a puppy in the house that needs reinforcement on house training, attention, breakfast and exercise.

Re: How to keep pup quiet?

We had the same situation with our boy. We tried everything the only thing that worked was to let him get older and more mature. For a while I thought he had an alarm clock 6:30 and he was up so everyone else had to be up. Work on not letting him out until he is quiet. This did not solve things for us. He would just make noise until he heard you up and then stop(smart dog).If you find something that works great. If not you may have to deal with it until he is older.

Re: How to keep pup quiet?

I have three dogs and one of them is 6 1/2 months old. I found that covering the cage worked when trying to keep her quiet as well as keeping the window blinds closed. The less light in the room the better.

Also I would get up with my puppy for a 30 mins to 45 mins in the morning. I would giver her some food, not much just a little, and then play with her or giver her something to keep her occupied. When I saw that she was not playing anymore I would pick her up and bring her back to her kennel. With in seconds she would be asleep and I would get at least 2 more hours of sleep.

I also cheated some days by letting her eat a little bit of food in the bed room, while I dozed off and on, and after she was done I took her out and made sure she was " on empty" then put her in the bed with me. This I don't recommend you to do too often because it can create a bad habit with her wanting to be in the bed with you all the time. But in a quick fix situation, once in a blue moon thing, it does work. I got to sleep in for at least 4 more hours.

Just remember that puppies have a lot of energy, but they do run out of steam fast if you play with them. Also try to have at least 1 hour if not 2 of non stop play with the puppy before you put her to bed at night. This should make sleeping through the night a breeze.
