Re: Should I Get My Dog Neutered??

I just had my baby girl Nikita spayed on the 17th (she turned a year old yesterday). I was planning on getting one litter out of her before I spayed her, but as a responsible pet owner her health is more important then a litter of puppies. She still acts almost like her normal self except she has lost her drive to be the head bitch in the house and has stopped using her weight to lean on people to get them to go where she wants them to go (now I am thinking the money I paid to the trainer was a waste to break this habit I just needed to spay her ) Sure puppies are cute, but I'd rather not chance having a stray get a hold of my girl. Even a well guarded bitch can have a run in with an unwanted male.

Re: Should I Get My Dog Neutered??

When I was arranging to adopt Missy, I was surprised to learn that she was still not spayed at 8 1/2. Well, since she was at a vet clinic at the time anyway, I had her spayed the week before I went to pick her up. She came through it GREAT and was a happy healthy dog the next week when I picked her up. She is much better off, I know. She has no incontinence problems, and has to watch her weight only due to hypothyroidism, which is controlled with medication and has nothing to do with having been spayed.

You were lucky if the female intact dogs you had before had no health problems as a result. Why take the chance? Your dog doesn't know she has a womb, and won't miss it.... do not transfer your own emotions to the dog. Have her spayed.

Dogs aren't people in fur coats. Once they wake up from the operation, bitches have no idea they were spayed and could care less. Making a connection between how dogs think and how people think is inaccurate--the brains of dogs aren't wired like ours.

Plus, dogs live in the moment; as RottieMom pointed out, her bitch "doesn't miss her womb nor is she laying around thinking 'now she can't reproduce.'" My girls were exactly the same way.

With the exception of one bitch, all of mine have been spayed. I've never had a problem with any of my spayed girls (or neutered boys, for that matter) getting porky. The reason for healthy dogs getting porky is over eating and insufficient exercise. Nor has incontenience been a problem.

Re: Should I Get My Dog Neutered??

Oskar (6 months) was just neutered yesterday, he had his rear dew claws removed too. He was still a little woozy last night but woke up full of energy today. Now the fun starts....no licking, running, jumping, rough play for a week! It is going to be hard for him and his 2 big brothers.
