Re: I need some help!!

We went through that for about 3 weeks and it gradually got better by doing the following... 1) yell NO BITE and ignore him/her for 5 -10 minutes and 2) our trainer recently told us about the 3 strike rule and it's working quite well for us. Say NO BITE once, wait 5 seconds, if he/she continues to bite deepen your voice and say NO BITE, wait 5 seconds, if he/she continues to bite, DROP THE CAN. The can is a soda can filled with something noisy (bb's, pennies, etc). The noise will startle him. We've only had to use the can twice and now I don't have to say NO BITE more than once. Hope that helps, it won't happen overnight.

Re: I need some help!!

I don't think I would be yelling at a 2 month old pup, or dropping a can with pennies in it to startle him/her. I would use redirection to a chew toy and say no bite. If you do a search here for biting or mouthing you will find a ton of useful tips on how to teach your pup that this is not acceptable behaviour.
Oh and don't worry he is being a normal puppy. All puppies no matter what their breed do this, they just need to be taught not to do it.

Re: I need some help!!

Odus is 13 weeks old and likes pant legs. I've started taking a squeeaky toy on our walks and squeeze it whenever he tries to get at my pants. It seems to draw his attention away from my pants and it's a game of mystery for him to try to find where the noise is coming from. So far so good. In the house I find if I play with him for 15 - 30 minutes he gets his energy out and will eventually take one of his chew toys and sit down with it. I think the pant leg thing may be a way of getting attention. Try it and see if it helps! I feel that a stimulated and tired rotti leads to a good rotti!

Re: I need some help!!

I have to say that using a can filled with pennies or rocks, when rattled, will distract the puppy from what he is doing. However I have been through multiple training courses with different dogs and I find that the, noise trick, can make your dog skittish.

The noise is meant to give them a little scare and this can be a bad thing in the long run. I found that having a toy close by, especially since you know your puppy will target your pants when walking, and redirecting his chewing to the toy will solve the problem. Once the puppy goes to grab on stop walking and tel him "No" wait a second and give him the toy. As he mouths the toy tell him what a good boy he is and pet him.

Never forget to tell your puppy he is a "good boy" when he is doing something you like. It is important that your little one learns that "good boy" is said to reward him. Other wise you end up with a confused dog because the disciplinary attention he gets from you, is only negative "no" or "bad dog". Always praise him for doing good as much as correcting him when bad.

I hope this helps you.

Re: I need some help!!

I am by no means an expert, I was here begging for the same help just a few weeks ago, but after taking the advice of our trainer the can trick has really worked for us. Like I said, it's not something done constantly, we don't even have to use it at all anymore. The noise is to get his attention, and that it does.
