Eating Enough?

I read that my 9-week old should be eating 2-3 cups of kibble a day. Right now, he stops at about 1-1.5 cups. Is this enough?

Re: Eating Enough?

What food are you feeding? Who says he should be eating that much? Does the food bag say that? Even 1.5 cups sounds like too much. My friend's rott is 100lbs, and eats 3 cups/day. My bro's 65lb Golden eats 2 cups.

Re: Eating Enough?

how many feedings do you give your puppy? Might be he is full. My puppy had 3 till about 4/5 mths then cut back to 2 meals a day. to keep up with his growing and blood sugar stabalization was the 3 meals when little like yours. 8 mths now and has 2 meals a day as with my other dog. they both eat about 2 cups kibbles each meal. no they are not fat.
but i am sure more people will tell you more and How you should be feeding your puppy.

Re: Eating Enough?

I just got my 8 week old Rottweiler from a very reputable breeder. They were feeding him 1 cup of food a day so I too have continued it all week. It seems to be going well with him. Good poops and he does not seem hungry. I have always noticed that bags and cans of food always over estimate. How much does your pup weigh?

Re: Eating Enough?

I have three dogs. My Shepard eats 3 cups a day. She is at her optimum weight.
My pup at 6 1/2 months eats a total of 4 cups a day broken up into several meals.
My adult male gets 5 cups.
It depends on the amount of activity your dog does. Some dogs do very little so they eat a smaller amount. High active dogs eat more. Also the kind of food you feed them is different too.
All of my dogs are at good weights, not a bit of extra fat on them.
You have to remember that a growing pup needs his food, and they burn it off fast. You should ask your vet this question to get the right answer. Each dog is different and all through it's life you will be adjusting the amounts and brands to best suit you dogs needs at different stages of life. As I like to say "the proof is in the pudding" I have a German Shepard and with this breed if your dog is over weight or the food is of poor quality they don't live that long. Mine is 14 years old and still going. I always consulted my vet about her food and any changes I wanted to make. I suggest you ask you vet too.

A pup of 9 weeks should be eating 3-4 small meals a day, approximately 3/4-1C . A good quality dry kibble should be fed, along with access to fresh water until after dinner.

Feed a young pup at the same time each day, as this will make house training much easier for you.... the puppy eats, the puppy poops.

Most important is how your puppy looks. A 9 week old puppy should not be fat, but it should not be skinny, either.

If you have concerns that your pup is not eating enough, have your vet check him over to make sure he is getting enough nutrition.
