Loose Stools After Switching Foods...

Amelia has been with us for almost 3 weeks now and when she came to us, she was on Eaglepack and came with a decent supply. When that was exhausted, I switched her to Wellness Puppy. I would have mixed the foods had Eaglepack been available, but I didnt have that luxury. She has been on it for about 5-6 days and her stools are still runny. Any thoughts? Bag is almost done and I am wondering if I should try something else. I also looked at California Natural (numbers on the Wellness were better).

Feedback?

Thanks.

Re: Loose Stools After Switching Foods...

Did Amelia have the runny stools when she came to you? This could be coccidia, giardia or even whipworms, or the fat content in the food. It is apparent that she is in some sort of distress, and dehydration is a real concern when the stools are this loose. I would suggest taking a fresh fecal sample to the vet for testing, and let us know the outcome.
Best wishes-
kathy

No runny stools when she came to us. She has been to the vet as well and all checked out. The EP was 30%/20% and the W is 28%/17% so its pretty darn close. I'll keep an eye on it and if it continues, we'll bring her in again.

Re: Loose Stools After Switching Foods...

I am going by memory here, so forgive me if I am wrong.
I believe Wellness foods will spoil. The feed store I use warned me ( I think it was Wellness), that the expiration is very important. They said that it will not smell, taste bad, etc. The only sign will be gastritional (sp?) upset, and an expired bag.

Re: Loose Stools After Switching Foods...

Wellness is a very rich food, and I had the same troubles you are having with my girl. I had to try a few different foods with Raelin, before I found one that her stomach could tolerate. It doesnt really matter which food I am giving her, that is not the point. You may have to try a few others, untill you can find one that is in your price range, and works for YOUR dog.

Good luck.

Re: Loose Stools After Switching Foods...

Thanks. I checked the bag, exp Sept 14 2006, so good there. I am going to finish this bag and go from there. This morning, stools were still loose, but formed. If this continues, I am going to try California Natural as I have had luck with that in the past, too.

Thanks everyone.

Re: Loose Stools After Switching Foods...

Make sure you slowly switch. Add a bit of the new kind with the old. Sarge had troubles with many premiums and always ended up with loose stools.

So take it slow with the switch and just keep building it up.

Lots of Rott pups don't do Wellness... well. Not sure why but it's a common complaint to my ears

I agree...I have tried Wellness foods 2 or 3 different times (different flavours), and my dogs were always really gassy.

What I have noticed though, when dogs have loose stools, is to cut back on the amount fed. Sometimes if you are overfeeding pup/dogs tend to have loose stools.

Try cutting back by 1/4 cup at each meal or so, and see how things go before you change the food again.
