new pup, need help potty training

okay finally got my pooch last night and already he soiled the floor a couple of times with his pee LOL

i have to say this much about him. he's a bit shy, nervous, and reserved. he loves belly rubs and tickling behind his ears. he likes some of his toys, but not others *shrugs* and he loves to chew LOL

one last thing, he's a pig when it comes to his food. i've never seen a dog woof down his food so fast. i swear he was just inhaling his food! LOL

time to get back to check on his and give him his lunchtime meal. hopefully he didn't pee on the floor again

Re: new pup, need help potty training

Welcome.

There are several threads about housetraining a puppy/dog. Do a search on the top right hand side of the forum page.

The best way to begin and be successful in housetraining a puppy is by crate training. Are you keeping your puppy crated? If so, it needs to be the proper size for the pup or it will be counter productive. The rest deals with being consistant, patient, observant, and understanding. The average puppy will not be 100% house trained until around 3-4 months of age. And remember, accidents do happen and don't consider this a set back. A puppy is just that, a puppy. There are also rules to when a puppy needs a potty break the most. They are when the first awake, after eating, after playing, after a bath, and just like having a baby; they need brakes during the night. Do not expect them to be able to "hold it" for hours. If your puppy continues to have accidents or is having trouble "learning" the potty rules of the house, then you need to step back and figure out what YOU'RE doing wrong. Once you've figured that out, start fresh and things should work out. Besides this great Rottie forum, there are several outstanding Rottweiler books available for new owners. These books cover everything an owner needs from housetraining to basic obedience skills.
Again, welcome to the forums!

I have the same problem with my Cinnamon, how old is the dog that pees on the floor alot? Cinnamon is 8 weeks and clean up pee about 15-20 times a day, I take her out to the bathroom and she pees and sometimes poops then comes right back inside then pees just to do it!

Re: new pup, need help potty training

I agree, the crate is the way to go. We got a crate with a divider in it. Look for a crate large enough for a full grown rottie that comes with a divider. A makeshift divider or ill-fitting divider could be dangerous. Section off a part small enough for food, water and yr pup to comforatably lie down (if you are goin to feed in the crate) and that is it.

The crate is your puppy's chill spot- aplace where he goes to relax, lie down, ect. the crate should be in a fairly well trafficked, but convenient, accessible area.

The crate represents the puppy's den. HE will not poop where he sleeps, eats, ect. That is why the area needs to be fairly small and grow when he does. He will not want to pee or poop and lay on top of it or right next to it.
Remember, puppies cannot hold it for long either, they have to go every few hours-including the middle of the night-Yes, just like a baby! Anybody who has ever had a pup who has had an accident in there crate can tell you the mouthful they have heard!

Always supervise him when he is not crated so you can watch for his "I gotta go" signs. Eventually he will learn to go to the door, or you can pre-emtively take him out every hour and a half or so. When he does have an accident-all puppies do- never rub his nose in it! You can show it to him if he has done it seconds before and say "no". You can also show your displeasure while cleaning the soiled area, but if has been any amount of time the pupppy will not connect the discipline to the act.

You can start to crate him for longer periods as he improves and rememder that he will catch on and this won't last for ever. He is a puppy! Take lots of picture while he's tiny and fuzzy!

Re: new pup, need help potty training

I agree with Gunsey's Mom. We are currently looking for a crate to have for April when we bring home our little "Gunnar" as this will undoubtedly help with the whole puppy stage.
