Puppy has dandruff - dry skin.

My 3 month old puppy has dandruff. We washed her a week ago using oatmeal - puppy shampoo which seems to have dried her coat out. Yesterday I used Pert Plus, and it is a little better, but still flaky - smaller though in size. We give her scrambled eggs a fewe times a week, but that hasn't helped either. She also gets some cottage cheese mixed in with her kibble for the calcium. Any supplements or suggestions?

Thanks!

Re: Puppy has dandruff - dry skin.

Put a little oil on her food. It will help dry skin.

However.... Can I ask why you are bathing her so frequently? Rotties really do not need to be bathed often. A lot of the time the soap will not get rinsed out thoroughly and this is the cause of the dry skin. I think this may be what is happening with your girl. Be sure to rinse well if you do give a bath and only give a bath if needed.

Re: Puppy has dandruff - dry skin.

Stop washing your dog so much!!!

I have washed Raelin 2 times in 2 years, and she is fine. The dog smell that many have is due to crappy food, or an outdoor dog rolling in something.

During this time of year, humidity in the house is a problem (lack of), so a small humidifier may do the trick.

As for a supliment, I give Raelin a fish oil caspule every day to help with the shedding and dry skin, seems to help.

also at this age she could be losing her puppy hair and her adult coat coming in, this also can be a cause of dandruff, and if she is not scratching/licking/biting at it alot I wouldn't worry about it.
Salmon oil capsules will help if it bothers you.

Re: Puppy has dandruff - dry skin.

Thanks for the advice. We gave her the 2 baths because of house breaking - pee smell from stepping in pee in her kennel and she threw up on the ride home on herself in our car. So she actually needed the 2 baths that she has gotten so far.

Re: Puppy has dandruff - dry skin.

I use flaxseed for bear's dry skin and that works well to, I just add a tablespoon to his food every day

Re: Puppy has dandruff - dry skin.

why not try using puppy wipes, they are great for those in between baths. they have conditioners in it for her coat and smells great too. they are perfectly safe to use since they are made for puppies.

wal-marts has them and i think krogers does too. also giving vitamins with the omega 3 fatty acids with garlic is a big help on their coat and skin, is suppose to help with their shedding as well. you can find them on the same asile as the puppy wipes.

the vitamins our older dog loves and so does our puppy.

good luck hope this helps you some.

Re: Puppy has dandruff - dry skin.

Regular baby wipes also work well for dealing with 'pee feet' and other in between regular bath smells.

I have baby wipes in the car, the bathroom, my eval bag for rescue, just about everywhere - you'd think we had HUMAN kids!!
