Losing Puppy coat, gaining adult coat

Forf the fierst time I've come across a question that I can't really find a clear answer to on this forum, maybe overlooked by me.

At what age do adult coat normally, or just your experience, come in? We are seeing changing with Sacha at 14 weeks (I think).

Thanks for putting up with another generalized question from us newbies

Cub's coat started changing around 12 weeks. The coat change induced prolific dandruff out of the blue. He's now almost 16 weeks old, and he's a sleek, black seal.

Re: Losing Puppy coat, gaining adult coat

My puppy just turned 13 weeks on Sunday. She is also starting to get her new coat and there is some dandruff on her back and head. I guess this is normal??

Mine too, Argo just turned 12 weeks and for the last 2 weeks there has been signs of dandruff. But just today, he has been shedding like crazy. Clumps of hair coming off when I'm brushing him. I would also like to know if this is normal.

I am so glad that you posted this. I picked Kaleb up from my daughter's two days ago (he is 12 weeks today), after not seeing him for several VERY long days and I noticed he had a lot of dandruff

He is also shedding really bad right now. Between Kaleb, shedding his puppy coat, Akasha blowing her coat before she goes in season and Keil who sheds 24/7, my house is covered in hair I swept earlier today and needed to sweep again not long after I was done.

I am glad to hear that the dandruff goes away I am looking forward to Kaleb losing his puppy coat, altho the downside to that is his getting bigger along with it. I wish he could stay just like he is now forever

Re: Losing Puppy coat, gaining adult coat

Some puppies will keep their puppy coat until they are almost a year old. We have had several pups that did not get their adult coat until they were 10 - 14 months of age. Others have come in at 3 - 4 months of age. Different lines, genetics, etc. all play a part.

Re: Losing Puppy coat, gaining adult coat

Mine showed signs of dandruff along with losing puppy hair at about 13 weeks, I started giving salmon oil and it cleared up in a matter of days. Sounds like it would have cleared up on its own, but I like the idea of the salmon oil anyway.

How much salmon oil do you give and do you do it in pills or oil form?

Re: Losing Puppy coat, gaining adult coat

Great informative thread. I was wondering why Baxter (13 1/2 weeks old) appeared to be shedding in the dead of winter. He also has dandruff. I will try the salmon oil. Thanks.

Re: Losing Puppy coat, gaining adult coat

It is amazing the difference a week makes. Kaleb has lost his fluffy puppy coat and it is now nice and shiny with no more dandruff.

My 13 week old pup was losing her puppy coat and was full of dandruff. After about a week her new coat is almost in on her back and its very shinny and no more dandruff.

Re: Losing Puppy coat, gaining adult coat

Well, I'm glad I saw this. The day we got CJ he was full of dandruff, so we gave him a bath with a vitamin E oatmeal shampoo but it came back the next day. It's the middle winter and everytime I brush him I fill the darned thing up.
