| Hi, I was wondering what the schedule for shots for a rottie puppy should be. Three shots? Four Shots?, I am currently using progaurd for the 1st and 2nd shots. Do you suggest a heartworm every 30 days or 45 days(I am using interceptor), yearly vaccinations or first 4 and thats that. If it is yearly, what is the cut off 5 years. I am a firm believer that too much chemicals can = problems later. Worming?, when needed or on a ________ basis. I know these ???'s are opinion on the owner or breeder, but I respect the opinions of many on this site. Being a first time rottie owner, I want to give my puppy the best care possible. Which pumping your dog with drugs and vaccines every year (in my opinion) is a tactic to make more $$$$. Thanks to all!!!!! |

| Re: Vaccination schedule for a puppy? My breeder did use a cocktail vaccine at 6 weeks, but once I had my puppy, I went to single antigen shots every two weeks until 14 weeks of age. Single antigens..parvo and distemper. I spayed my puppy at 6 months and waited until she was 9 months to give the Imrab 3 rabies vaccination and at 18 months, she was given a single parvo booster. She has been titered since then for both Parvo and Distemper every year and levels have been good and just had her Rabies titer done after three years and it was good too. No more vaccinations unless the titers show they are needed.

| Re: Vaccination schedule for a puppy? We go along with Dr. Jean Dodd's research and recommendations which have also been substantiated by other facilities. Depending on where you live, you may need to give kennel cough, lepto, corona or some of the other vaccines. We only give the ProGard DPv (distemper and parvo). We are fortunate in that we do not have fleas or ticks where we live so we do not need to subject our dogs to the chemicals contained in those applications. We give the ProGard at 9 weeks, 12 weeks and 15 weeks. A booster is given one year later and then every three years thereafter that. Many times I will titer before giving the shots and many times they have not had to have them due to the titer showing that they are well-covered. My dogs receive no vaccinations at all after they reach the age of 6 years. Rabies is given at 5 months of age. Then one year after that, thereafter every three years. We worm our dogs every six months.

| Re: Vaccination schedule for a puppy? I have a question about titers. I have asked my vet and the office told me it wasn't needed. Repeatedly. I have asked other places and keep getting the same answer. Why? My pup is going on 6 months and I would like a parvo titer done to see if his immunities are good. Why would they fight it so much? |

| Re: Vaccination schedule for a puppy? Because A) they don't believe in doing titers instead of boosters B) titers are more expensive (around here a distemper/parvo titer is $55-80 counting the office visit) and they are tryng to save you $ C) they think people who do titers are wackos Of the 4 vet practices I use regurlarly ne is B, one is A & C , one cares not either way and one prefers titers
