Re: 7 month old puppy

yes it's normal. my boy is 11 months and still squats. i've been told if they're neutered early they may never lift unless they see other males doing it and try to imitate them. i know a few males who are much older and still squat.

Re: 7 month old puppy

There is a pretty wide variation in times, it's not abnormal for male pups to be 12 months old before the lift. Some males who are neutered young will squat their whole lives.

On the other hand, there is my almost 12 week old puppy who lifted his leg for the first time this morning! It was a monkey-see, monkey-do situation where he watched the old-man Beagle mark the fence and decided to give leg lifting a try himself.

Re: 7 month old puppy

wow i didn't realize it could take so long! i had heard that if they are neutered too early it might keep them from lifting their leg, but i have a book that says usually between 6-9 months. i appreciate the input.

Re: 7 month old puppy

is there any advantage or disadvantage? or is it just something males do?

Sarge is 18 months and still squats.. once in awhile cocks his leg but rarely.

I would rather have a squatter....less mess.

I can't really think of any advantages, per se. It's not like every time your dog lifts his leg, you get another notch on your bonus card towards a free sandwich at Subway.

It's just something that boys do.

Re: 7 month old puppy

Oscar's 7 m/o (not fixed) and he still squats. It's actually pretty funny to watch now because as he's getting so big he sometimes ends up peeing on his own front legs. So now he sort of kilters to the side and moves one foot over...it's pretty funny and looks pretty awkward. I'm assuming it's only a matter of time before he figures out if he just lifts the leg...no more pee on the feet. haha!

Re: 7 month old puppy

i guess it dosent really matter either way. i was just curious only because i have never had a male that didnt lift his leg. but squatting does seem to have its advantages, he dosent seem to be peeing on the world when he is squatting. unlike my older male who has to pee on everything!!!! especially the plants in my garden!! ughh!!
