Weight

Hello!

I wonder when you can tell how big the puppy is going to be when he is full grown? If you can say that at all? I heard a friend over here say that when the puppy is 9 months old he/she is at at 90% of their full grown weight?

Magnus

Re: Weight

The rule our vet used was to take Maynard's weight at 3 months and triple it. He weighed a bit over 30 lbs then, so we expect him to finally weigh around 95 lbs when he's finally done growing.

Re: Weight

Most rottweilers don't fully physically mature until about age 3.

A dog's genetics are more telling of how and when they will physically (and mentally) mature than some "rule of thumb". Talk to your dog's breeder to get a better idea of how his/her lines mature.

Young rottweilers should be kept as lean as possible to help prevent skeletal and hip problems. Big is NOT better when it comes to this breed, so don't measure your dog's weight by a number on a scale, but visually. You should see a noticeable waist when viewed from above, and a nice tuck up behind the ribs when viewed from the side.

Yes of course, we don't whant a huge fat puppy that might get skeletal problems, but if he is only built in a natural way with natural proportion, I see no problem with big puppys and big adult Rottweilers as long as we breed on 100% healthy dogs. There are to many bad breeders out there.

Re: Weight

I agree. Look at the parents or past sibilings to detemine your pups future weight.

Is it 50/50 % (mother/fahter) the genes transplant to the puppy, or is one of them more powerful.
