Re: Puppy's weight and puppy food questions

It's probably a good idea that you do some extensive research about proper growth in a pup in this forum. There is no way for me to tell you weither or not your 4 month old is at an appropriate weight without seeing him. Each dog has a different build which results in different weights.

As for appropriate dog food for your pup, what food if your pup being fed right now? You should try going to a specialty pet store to find your dog's food. I can tell you that if you are buying your pup's food from the grocery store that you probably have him on the incorrect food.

My female pup Luna is almost 30 pounds and turned 16 weeks today. She is in portion for he size and very healthy. She eats Nutro Natural Large Breed, controlled growth formula and loves it.

Re: Puppy's weight and puppy food questions

Well, you are making a step in the right direction. There are many members here that dislike the Nuro line mainly because it has a lot of grain and fillers. Like I mentioned, I feed Nutro Natural Choice and my pup is at a great weight, has a beautiful coat, her poop is small and odor free, and she loves it. You did purchase puppy food right?

I decided of Large Breed, controlled growth formula because I have read much info on rotties growing too quickly as puppies and having health issues later in life.

Do you crate train? My pup has been house broken since she was about 11 weeks. She did have a urinary tract infection for a week or two which during that time she had multiple accidents. Now, however, she is completely potty trained without accidents for nearly 5 weeks. I attribute her success to frequent trips outside and crate training.

Good Luck!

Re: Puppy's weight and puppy food questions

yes i also bought the controlled growth puppy. he has just been pooping like 5 to six times a day. hopefully this new food will help. They had innova also but they told me this nutro should be great because that is what the lady at the store feeds her rotties. I almost tried science diet because the vet recommended it but i read here first and it chaznged my mind.
I hope this nutro is good though

Re: Puppy's weight and puppy food questions

i started with purina also, and switched to nutro with very good results (more solid stools, better looking coat).

35 lbs at 4 months is just fine--mine was almost exactly that weight at that age, and has been gaining about 3lbs per week (30 lbs at 15 wks, 39 lbs at 18 weeks, 42 lbs at 19 weeks today).

some pups are much larger at that age, and a few are much smaller. most important is weight for the frame. i'd say feed as much as ruckus wants to eat as long as you can easily feel his ribs.

You would have been much better off buying Innova.
Innova has much more meat, less grains and uses human grade meats and ingredients. You also would have had to feed far less Innova then Nutro.

IMO...Nutro is a middle of the road food...not bad, but not great....Innova would be considered a top of the line super premium food.

Since our breed has such a short life and is so prone to getting cancer's, and having other health problems....the best thing you can do for your pup is to get it eating a healthy, holistic food.

I would far rather put money into buying the best food, than giving it to the vet for a variety of health problems....pay now...or pay later.

I would suggest people read the ingredients on the back of the bag of the food they are feeding...most people do not realize what is in the food they feed their dogs everyday.

Re: Puppy's weight and puppy food questions

Purina One is considered the "Junk Food" of dog food.

Here's a helpful forum link.

http://www.rottweiler.net/forums/nut...ghlight=Purina

Any food that puts grain and fillers before protein is considered a poor quality food. Yes, your dog's poop may seem small and solid, but try a better quality food and things will improve greatly.

Re: Puppy's weight and puppy food questions

I'm considerably happy with Nutro Natural. I would not recommend any Nutro Max foods however. The difference in the quality is astounding!

I have considered switching to Innova, but the switch will need to come at a later time. My husband just bought a 33# bag and told me he'd strangle me if I donated bag and bought another expensive brand.

Re: Puppy's weight and puppy food questions

Puppies vary so much. Its hard to say what's "Normal". I dont have a Full Rottie, I have a Mix. He is 4 months old (on 11/2) and is 40 lbs. He is a Rott/German Shepherd mix. I used to feed Nutro NC. I have no problems with the food. I now feed my guys Canidae, and they are doing well.

It really depends which Nutro you feed. Nutro Ultra is definitely a super-premium (it's a Whole Dog Journal approved food), Nutro Max is low-end and Nutro Natural is middle of the road. I would never feed Nutro Max, would only feed Nutro Natural if my only other choice was, say, Beneful, but I have added Nutro Ultra to my dog's rotation schedule after reading this year's WDJ list (since I won't feed anything that's not on that list), he loves it and is doing really well on it.

I also have a low opinion of "large breed" foods, I think you can just feed less of a regular food and add your own filler (like green beans), which will likely be of much higher quality than the filler they add to the regular food and then market as "large breed" (which is the only difference in most cases).

Cool Re: Puppy's weight and puppy food questions

Yes...you are right spidey...Nutro Ultra is a good quality food.
I wish the petfood stores would push this food more...it's so much better than Nutro Natural or the Nutro Max.

I agree with you..the Large Breed foods are just a marketing ploy...lower in calories and more grains...and they throw in a pinch of glucosamine and chondroitin...and all you are left with is crappy, grain filled foods.

Most large breed pups will grow slowly on controlled portions of a good adult dog food or a good quality puppy food.

Re: Puppy's weight and puppy food questions

I feend my rott Nutro NC, but I really don't feel that any of the previously mention products are really bad. I do have a question though. This is my first rott and he is approaching 5 months. His weight is approx. 46lbs. is that a normal weight? How many cups of food should I feed him in a day? He usually gets 2 in the morning and 2 in the evening.
