Eating their own feces

I'm not sure but I think I caught my 12 week old male eating his own feces today. I had him baby gated in the kithcen next to the living room where I was sitting. I suddenly smelled poo and went to check. There was signs of it on the floor but none there. Could he have eaten it to hide it or something???

Anyone seen this behavior before?

Re: Eating their own feces

Some dogs do this just because they can, like the taste or just have a "THING" for it.

Some do it for the undigested nutrients. What do you feed him. In some cases its a sign of Coprophagia (Eating unusual things) but it is not always if rarely a case of this.

Since you didn't actually see him do it he may have just had a clinger as I call them and scooted around and got it smudged on the ground.

I feed him Pro Plan Dry Puppy Kibble for Large Breed.

Are there any ill health effects to this. Like I said I only think he did it once. He's only had 2 accidents in the house in the few weeks I've had him (poop that is). He's pretty good about going outside.

Look over the Nutrition section and you will find lots of threads on some better kibbles to feed in the same price range.

As far as health effects if it becomes a habit he could start eating other animal feces and catch parasites and worms and other doggie diseases. I would discourage it but not totally panic at this point.

Re: Eating their own feces

My male has always been fed a premium kibble and he has always eaten his poop. As a puppy (he's 3 now), I had to watch that he'd try to grab other dogs' poop when out on walks but that stopped before too long. He will still eat his own poop if given the chance so I have to be extra diligent in scooping as soon as possible. My two females have never eaten their poop and he has never eaten theirs - only his.

Re: Eating their own feces

My male puppy, 5 months, does it as well. Mostly, I have to be quick in calling him away and scooping quickly.
