Arrow My puppy's coat!!!

Hello everyone I'm new to this site, and I have a question. I have a six months old pup, Tank, his markings are dark mahagony, but his bottom belly is light tan, and a little tan line between his chest markings, and the neck markings, and also kind of greish, tanish fade, in his under coat, around the neck, and on the shoulder, is that gonna get darker, or will it stay the same, or could it even become more, I've been noticing the change in the under coat for about almost a month now, could it be change of season, or are those the dog's colors, and what do you guys think all of this will turn to. I hope I'm not asking too much, and I hope I'm not asking any silly questions. I'm new to owning rotts, and I just want to kind of find our as much as I could

I don't know what to tell you about the tannish grey in his undercoat on his shoulders - I never noticed that with mine. But Rocco is a mahogany and his coloring continued to darken until he was probably 10 months old or so, maybe older - it's been awhile. I definitely know that by 1 year of age his markings were much darker than then were at 7 months.

I beleive (I may be wrong) that it's not uncommon to have a different coloured undercoat on a rottie.Usually shows up around the shoulders neck I think.

A tan, grey, or black undercoat is acceptable for Rottweilers, but it should not show through the guard hairs.

What does it mean if it does show through the guard hairs... My pup has this problem with his coat also.

It means that if you were showing him in the conformation ring, it would be a deviation from the breed standard. If you are not showing in conformation, I wouldn't worry about it.

Re: My puppy's coat!!!

Welcome, I have a Tank too...and I'm no expert, but I have two dogs with very different coats, one very short, one a bit the more standard coat, and both have changed considerably in color and texture over the first year and then some of their life. Jake isn't two yet and his color is still changing.

Re: My puppy's coat!!!

Thank you everyone, you all have been a great help, I'm still trying to figure out how to post pics on the site, so I can show you what my tanky looks like, he's about 6 months, and he's 84 lbs, but I think he's fit, nice waste line, and I can feel all his ribs, but hopefully soon , I can show his pictures.

Re: My puppy's coat!!!

Holey carp! Maybe it's just me, but 6 months and 84 pounds is big!
My Faust is 5 months and 50 lbs, and Frau is almost three years and only 66 pounds! (but Frau is a lean-weiler. Right height, but not as wide )

No wonder you named him Tank!

Re: My puppy's coat!!!

I know he's huge , but the vet said he's in good shape, I like big dogs, but I want him to be lean, I just don't want to exercise alot right now, he's still too young, but later on I'm gonna put him to work, maybe after he turns one. His coat was worring me, but I think none of the lighter shades are really gonna settle in, I think he'll be really dark, even his mahogany markings, are getting darker by the day, but I guess we'll see. Does any one know how to add a picture next to my name, and some in the galary?

The avatar (the one next to your name) came with buying a Rottstock t-shirt, and you may have to be a full member for the gallery.
My Jake was far more tan than my Tank when he was younger, and is now getting more mahogany, and still changing at a year and a half.

Re: My puppy's coat!!!

Ok, his markings are more of a tan, vs. mahogany..........you can see what mahogany markings are under the dog Arci.....
http://www.rottweiler.net/gallery/sh...&orderby=views

and he seems to have an extra marking there between his bowtie on his chest, and the end of his facial markings on his neck, I guess it's not a problem if you didnt buy him as a show quality dog.......
What she means by guard hairs is that the undercoat should not be visible just because, you shouldnt be able to see grey, or tan under the black 'top'hairs if you will. this is why the judge runs his hands thru the coat backwards to see the undercoat........
Oh yeah, not a good idea to have him tied out with a choke chain on; that's asking for a freak strangling accident to happen.

Re: My puppy's coat!!!

He's black & rust. His face would have to be lighter to be a black & tan

The extra tan on his throat is a "double mark" or a "necklace mark" It's usually called a necklace mark if it's a thin line like a necklace, so I'd call his a double mark. Some double marks shed out but since he's over 6 months old I guess it will stay. Double marks are fairly common in some lines and is a color fault if you were showing him
