Puppy Hip Dysplasia Symptoms

Hi new to the forum, based in uk

just wondering if anyone can give me some advise on the possible signs of hip dysplasia is puppies, iknow that it is possible for a puppy to exhibit symptoms from 4 months old and i am a little concerned as my 23 week old Rottie male teddy has been 'bunny hopping' whilst running, i have read that this can be an early indicator of HD, he does not exhibit any pain or discomfort and is not reluctant to raise up on his hind legs.
Having never had a rottie i would greatly appreciate any advise , I have always taken great care with regards to this issue i.e no excessive excercise, good diet, and no stair climbing etc.

Thanks

Any or all:

Bunny hopping is one, roaching of the back as the dog attempts to shift weight to the front is another. Difficulty in using the rear legs when getting up from lying on the floor occasionally.

Thank you.

is the bunny hopping an exclusive trait of HD, I have been told that rotties do have an unusual run, however he does bring both back legs in at the same time, he doesnt appear to be showing any other signs though.

The only sure way of course is an xray.

The lack of a proper trot is also indicative that something is wrong. Keep in mind that all structural problems are not HD.

I'd like to add, that unless you are experienced in structure, proper movement and so forth, don't attempt to evaluate it on your own, and as I said, all bad movement is not attributed to HD. If you are concerned, you should ask for a film to be taken.

Yup. My bunny hopping puppy developed HD. That was one of his "few" signs. Also a more "layed back" puppy that cannot keep up with others his own age and tires very easily, can be a sign of early problems.

Does he have any intermittent limping?

My deceased Rotti did all of this stuff and it turned out to be bad knees, not HD. I'm with Judy W -- go talk to a vet.

Thanks for all your comments, Teddy appears ok in every other way no limping, bags of energy, he doesn't bunny hop all the time but i will visit the vet for a medical opinion , however i really appreciate all your thoughts, as i said i am new to this forum and feel it is an excellent way to get advise and chat to other rottie lovers.

cheers again
