Will beef bones wear down teeth?

We were buying bully sticks for Faust to chew on to make her actually lay still for 10 minutes, but she eats a six inch in about 15-20 minutes. We gave her a big beef marrow bone from the pet store and she's been working on it for weeks. She just lays there and gnaw gnaw gnaw.

I know nylabones are designed not to wear down teeth, but she's not interested in them. Will an animal bone wear down their teeth? Her puppy k-9s were wore down to the nerves when we got her, and I'd prefer she not do the same to her adults.

My dogs get raw beef knuckle bones on a regular basis. Although not a meal replacement, these large dense bones provide hours of entertainment. The dense fiber of beef bones is fantastic for cleaning teeth and being raw they are totally digestable. I emphasize that I only give raw bones. Never give cooked bones. The cooking process makes them hard and brittle which can be a dangerous combination. Raw bones will never wear your dogs teeth down.

Raw bones can be very good for cleaning your dogs teeth but if you have an aggressive chewer it CAN wear down (or even break) their teeth.

I give them to my dogs once a month for a couple of days. My dogs chew on them but don't "attack" them like I have seen some dogs do.

With the large hock bones my dogs usually eat all of it. The ones I get from the grocery store are sold as "soup bones" for about 89 cents per lb. and they are sawed in half. I have noticed that the leg bones that you usually see sawed into circles with marrow in the middle, are rarely eatin. They lick the marrow out of the middle, but don't bother with the round bone. These bone circles, I usually don't leave down for them and I throw them away. After a day they will dry out and be hard and the dogs don't really eat them anyway. I have been going raw for about the last two years now and have never seen a worn down or broken tooth. Quite the contrary. My vet., judges, other breeders and non rottie people have all commented of the condition of my dogs and particularly coat, muscle tone, and teeth. It may not be everyones choice to go raw, but it has certainly worked for me.

I have started to wait until he has licked out the marrow from the middle of the marrow bones and fill it with his food and then freeze it, doesn't last as long as I would like, but cheaper than buying them every week.

The bones in the pet store are not raw. They are brittle and often break or shatter, to say nothing about the preservatives and artificial flavors. These are not processed in the best conditions either. Cooked bones are hard, brittle and it seems would wear teeth more easily.

Raw bones from a grocery store or butcher is a cleaner product to begin with. Add that to the fact there are no preservatives and fed 'raw' do not shatter or splinter. I have had a few break in half, but I take those away. Raw bones are safer.

Ok what about when they eat every bone that is given to them .. My pups eat their bones .. You give them a bone that says it should last hours , and i am lucky if it lasts 10 -15 minutes ...

Maybe the bones you are giving are not big enough. When my guys were little, they got beef neck bones. When they started INHALING those, we switched to the bigger knuckle bones. If you are using the knuckle bones from the butcher or grocery store and they are cut in half, talk to the butcher/meat man and ask if you could get some that are not cut in half. If you let them know that you will be a regular customer for these type of bones, they will probably be happy to supply them.

I bought this bone when Frau was a pup, so it's been kicking around a long time. She never really bothered with it, and with the move and everything it was packed away. I don't even know where Faust found it, but she liked it. I would prefer to give them raw bones, so will go to the butcher soon. Especially now that she has so much energy she can't let out.
So unless she's fanatic on it, it shouldn't really damage her teeth then? She doesn't get it when I'm not around to watch, anyway.
