Ears are Big and Floppy

Hi,

I'm now learning that rottie body parts grow in different spirts. My Diamond is 5months old and 85% of the time, 1 or both of her ears are found flipped back. She shakes her head alot to get them back to normal.
She does have rather large, floppy ears and a small somewhat pointy head.

The rest of her body is well proportioned so far, so i'm assuming she will grow into her DUMBO ears?

Frau's ears deffinatly grew first when we was a pup, she looked like a hound! But she grew into hers. I think they're still a TAD long, but not noticable, really. I think it makes her cute. She also has a relatively jowly face, so I call her my hound.

LOL! Both of my females have had ears too big for their heads - as adults! Skye's are even bigger than Perle's were. She almost always has one flopped back when she's running around. I'm always telling her, "fix your ear!"

Yeah! We always say "Oh, Frau blew an ear! She's broken!"

Check out the pix I just posted of Lulu (she's just over 5 months old) with her "ear hat". She spends half her day with one or both ears flipped over until she shakes her head and gets them down again. Always good for a laugh when I'm not expecting to see her like that!

Re: Ears are Big and Floppy

hi we bought a rottie at eight weeks old from people that could not afford to look after the pups and they couldnt afford to have there tails docked or there dew claws removed.this does not bother us at all but there is one problem with his ears at first they were really large and triangled but now at 12 weeks old his ears seem to have folded in at the back and seem small and a funny sort of oblong shape this is quite concerning as the rest of the litter still have triangled shape large ears. Can anyone shed any light on this as to whether it is a normal thing or not? thanks natandjay

Well, it's not desirable to have an extra fold, generally referred to as a fly away ear(s). Ideally, and for show...the ears have one fold forward, and are triangular. Is it normal? Many otherwise wonderful dogs are afflicted. Just keep the underside clean and free of debris. I took care of a lovely dog for a friend. She would develop an abcess every summer...but she's one of the few to have such difficulty. Most do not.
