Peeing when we aren't looking

Well, here is another newbie question. Bunk pees in teh hosue when we are not looking. We truly want her to be an inside dog, but she loves to be outside. When we are inside, we try to keep her close...in the kitchen with us, in the tv room etc. EXAMPLE, yesterday I kept her by me all night so I could watch her and catch her in the act - yes I was trying to set her up so I could bust her and teach to to go outside. Then I went to the bathroom for 20 seconds and walk out and right on the hallway carpet in front of the bathroom was a fresh spot.

Question #1: Is she smart enought to know when we are and are not watching he, at 19 weeks?

Question #2: Is there any other way to set her up so you can catch her prior to or in the act, so you can teach her rright from wrong?

Sub-note: she does fine for 4 hours stretches through the night and when we are at work. When we are home, I take her out about every 45 minutes and she potties everytime.

So, why does she even need to pee in the house, why does she do it only when we are home with her, and how does she know when we are not looking?

Thanks a lot

No, your puppy does not know when you are not looking. At 19 weeks he is still very much a puppy and needs 100% supervision all the time.

Do a search for potty training, you will get a good response.

Taking your puppy out every 45 minutes is good. If your puppy is on a feeding schedule you might want to take him out every 1/2 after he eats. Also playing and running makes puppies have to "go", and they always have to go AS SOON as they wake up.

Last night the puppy may have been dozing and you woke it when you left the room, so it peed.

Many people actually keep their puppies on leashes tied to their belts in the house until they are 100% potty trained. That way you can always see the puppy and won't miss it if the puppy starts sniffing around and trying to squat.

Also if your puppy is not crate trained, I would get a crate and do that. That way if you need to be out of the room or house you can put him in there and he won't have an accident.

Hang a bell on the pup's collar so you will hear when she gets up and starts to move around. That way you will be looking and can take her out.
