Correct weight for a puppy

Hiya,

My puppy is 12wks and when weighted at the vet this week, he has about 24.5 pounds. Any idea if that's just about correct? I feed him puppy food, now 1 cup and a bit 3x a day. I just keep an eye on his waste and adjust as needed. But it seems a lot of gain in 2wks. He was 19.9 than. It is first time that I own a large breed dog...:-))

Thanks

Renata

That is hard to say without being able to see the puppy, and feel it with my own hands.

Puppies come in different shapes and sizes, some have heavier bone, more mass than others. What is normal for one pup is really overweight for another.

You need to be able to EASILY feel ribs, see a tuck up. If they look like a rolly, fat puppy, then they are just that.

I have a male pup out of my litter, 5 months old, 65lbs and a female, 43lbs, the one we kept is 55lbs. All are of excellent weight, tucked up, ribs right there, but as you can see, they vary a lot. Dax is taller, heavy-boned, and a boy which tends to mean a little larger. My Wicca has nice bone, about 21inches tall, a little more robust, she is 55lbs where her little sister Oola is like their mother, lighter bone, more slight. Now do you see what I mean? They are all the same age, yet vary hugely in weight, but all are correct for their respective structure.

What does your vet think?

Kristi

When we got to vet for first shot (at 9wks, right after we got him), he suggested that we feed him only 3x a day but said its good for little puppies to have proper weight in case they come off food for some reason, which apparently sometimes happen. Last visit this Tuesday, he was happy with his weight.

Thanks for advise.

Renata,
Jazmin is 17 weeks and probably 40 pounds by now, she has been gaining 5 lbs every week for the past couple weeks , so your puppy is going to be gaining more weight quicker. Since we've noticed the rapid gain weight my vet advised me to increase her food. I used to feed her 1 cup of kibble three times a day, now I feed her 1 and 1/4 of a cup three times a day.

You're supposed to feed them more when they're in their growing stage and then you decrease the food when they obtain their steady weight (all according to my vet). Take lots of pictures while you can!

Like most have said, every pup is different for sure.

Oscar was 21 lbs. at 12 weeks, 36 lbs. at 16 weeks and 48 lbs. at 18 weeks. He's now turning 21 weeks on Tuesday and I don't know his weight for sure but I'm guessing he's now around 55 lbs.(maybe more) and 22". Our vet says his weight is perfect for his frame (i.e. tight waste, can feel ribs etc) and that he's not growing too fast. He eats 2-1/2 cups of Canidae 2x per day (total 5 cups per day), plus training treats, the odd frozen carrot etc.

Lion is doing just fine now. He is growing steadily and I have to keep an eye on modifying the quantities. It feels like every other week he suddenly pulls up (height) and becomes thin..and than he catches up again. I feed him 1 1/4 of cup 3x day and as Vancouverislandrot said, the odd treat...mainly frozen veg. We are looking good:-)) Just don't attempt to carry him anymore as he is getting a bit heavy. Building the fencing in the yard up this weekend cause in couple of weeks, he would be over it...

Ok I am worried.

After waiting 6 weeks my new pup arrived (flown in) from the breeder today. Took her straight to the vet. At 8 weeks old she weighed just under 7 pounds. The Vet did not seem to ave a problem with her weight. But, listening to U guys Greti should weigh twice her weight today.

When I got my first Rott (male) he was 11 months old and he weighed 95 pounds. So I have no reference. Should I be nervous about my female?

When I brought Jewel home at 8 weeks old, she weighed 9.7lbs. She is 3 years old now, and weighs 80lbs, but she is not by any means a big girl. She is 23 inches tall, medium sized.

Her daughter Wicca, at 8 weeks old, weighed 15lbs by comparison, but had much heavier bone and overall structure than her mother at the same age.

You need to consider bone, overall mass, and health. If the vet gave her a clean bill of health, then don't worry about it. She will grow at her own rate. Over feeding her is only going to make her fat too, it won't make her bigger, just keep that in mind.

Thanks,

My concern is that I thought she was very light for age. I had never seen a 8 week old that small. Now that I have her she is eating her little butt off. I give her all that she wants to consume within 20 minutes.

Considering her parents are both +100 pounds I would have thought she would have weighed more.

You need to look at as many dogs in the pedigree as you can to truly help determine size in a litter of puppies. Just because the parent's were large does not mean that THEY didn't have siblings that were medium sized. That all comtributes too. Find out how big the grandparents were, etc... The parents create them, but they do so with ALL of their family traits which doesn't necessarily mean the puppies they produce are going to be the same size at all.

I have pictures of grand parents and great grand parents. None were huge. But decent size. Pup is supposed to be 1st pick female; show quality. My assumption would be that she would be bigger.

I may be mistaken

I have a GSD/Rott mix who is 13 weeks today and weighs 25.8 lbs. he will be 3 months tomorrow. he is ideal. I can see and feel his last 3 ribs and he is lean and muscular. He is starting to get a little chubby at the moment so I think he is going to go thru a growth spurt. he eats 1 cup of food in the morning, 1/2 cup lunch and 1 cup dinner. thats all he wants. and I dont push it.
